cold colonization
    #3693600 - 01/28/05 03:13 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

My question is if colonization will occur in a reasonable time frame at only 65 Fahrenheit. If it will, this will prevent the grower from requiring an incubator.

Details:
My hypothetical FOAF has three 550ml cakes, innoc'ed today with 2-3cc of B+ solution each. The substrate is perfectly measured PF Tek, one part water, one part brown rye flower, and two parts fine particulate verm, with the additive of three tablespoons fresh unbrewed coffee grounds (not to each, but in total).

I would definitely build an incubator if your temps are that low...
You want to be in the low 80s

Depends on what you consider to be a reasonable time.

At 65 degrees F....your looking at possibly months.

At 81 to 83 degrees F...your looking at a week or so.

Build an incubator...you won't be worry.

It will grow, it only will take several weeks longer. Also depending on strain.

I have a GT strain which germinates at 17C (62,6F) in 3 days. From a fungi research insitute in the Netherlands...

But at 86F it is like wildfire!

If time (and contams!!) is no issue at all you could give it a go!

I guess I'll have to transform my fruiting chamber into a tub-in-tub incubator. It's 20 Fahrenheit outside, 50 in the attic and basement, 65 was an optimistic guess for the main floor. And contamination IS an issue, i don't have access to a pressure cooker (or 50$ it would require for a small one) so these were boiled/microwaved. AND I've used the last of my spores!

Thanks for the replies, i got worried when the thread hit the middle of the second page with no views or posts.

Yeah, investment:
2 tubs (buckets are cheap!!)
1 fishtankheater

Makes: 15$-30$.

If you find a bargain of an electric blanket.... Is also nice.

It's not just a matter of time guys it's a matter natural conditions and pinsetting. The drop from incubating temps to fruiting temps especially if in the optimal growth/fruiting ranges will increase your chances of decent to phenomenal flushes. Sure you can possible get away enough for a crappy flush and if that makes you happy then in your eyes it will be a success but in my eyes it is a terrible waste of your time and theirs, they deserve better!
