Look around the FAQ section:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/faq2.php
PF Tek in the basics. Also perlite humidification.
Basically..perlite (wet with some water) goes in a big rubbermaid. Then you put each cake on its lid (you can set directly on the perlite, or tinfoil, cling wrap, whatever..just not paper or cardboard or wood)...then put the lid on. The cakes will need light (minor light..any) 12 hours a day...lots of fresh air...and 73-77 degree temps optimal (these can vary with still success). Also you should dunk your cakes in water in the fridge overnight..then drain and pop them out (butterknife sterilized can help) then while still moist, roll in dry sterile verm. Put some verm on the lid (or whatever) then set your cake on the verm covered lid.then put a little extra verm on top of the cake. The verm all over will help it hold in moisture. Now you want it wet though so mist it until moist. Keep moist while giving the three pinning triggers I mentioned earlier and in less then a week you should be seeing some signs of primordia (little white dots) or maybe even pins at that point.

It needs light to trigger the cycle, then it needs less light to mature.

quited: After your jars are fully colonized open them up and scrape out all the vermiculite on the top then gently tap the jar until it slides out (it should slide out fairly easy). At this point I would recommend a dunk and roll, submerge your cake in sterile water overnight remove from bag and roll in verm, after this you can put some perlite at the bottom of your terrarium for humidity but if you do DO NOT set cakes directly on perlite put down some foil or even the lid. Initiate the 12/12 light cycle.
I saw in your post you mention putting down perlite and verm then your cake then more perlite and verm on-top this is called casing and it works very very well. I would read a more detailed Tek but in a nutshell. Take some Coco-coir break off a suitable amount and add correct amount of water this will act as your moisture layer, either with gloves or clean hands gently crumble your cake over the coco-coir, mix up some more Coco-coir, Vermiculite, and water then put this over your crumbled cake, place a sheet of aluminum foil over your casing and poke with holes. Again this is a very rough description of the Tek but it should clear up any confusion
good luck with your research
