As if the pub needed another post about The Dead

I just can't help myself. I went out today and bought "The Very Best of Grateful Dead". I hadn't previously known all that much about them but just had to find out for myself what all this hype was about. Along with listening to this great CD as well as reading about them on various websites I have come to the conclusion that we in fact do need another post in the pub to celebrate thier music, thier lives, and everything that they stand for. I ABSOLUTELY love the song, "Touch of Grey" and have been seriously missing out as I've never heard it before today. It's my favorite song on this album. Here's a list of the songs it has, and I ask you to please recommend some more of your favorites that aren't listed below as well as the album they are found on so I can go buy them all, lol.
Truckin' Touch of Grey Sugar Magnolia Casey Jones Uncle John's Band Friend of the Devil Franklin's Tower Estimated Prophet Eyes of the World Box of Rain U.S. Blues The Golden Road (The Unlimited Devotion) One More Saturday Night Fire on the Mountain The Music Never Stopped Hell in a Bucket Ripple
I love this pic inside the CD cover. It must have been a wonderful experience to be there at the time this photo was taken.

You must buy Europe '72 to get a flavour of the Dead at their best live.
China Cat/Rider on that album is one of my favourites!

Look out of any window any morning, any evening, any day Maybe the sun is shining birds are winging or poo is falling from a heavy sky - What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago
Walk out of any doorway feel your way, feel your way like the day before Maybe you'll find direction around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you - What do you want me to do, to watch for you while you're sleeping? Well please don't be surprised when you find me wanking too
Look into any eyes you find by you, you can see clear through to another day I know it's been seen before through other eyes on other gays while going home -- What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? It's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago
Walk into splintered sunlight Inch your way through dead dreams to another land Maybe you're tired and broken Your tongue is ugly with words half spoken and thoughts unclear What do you want me to do to do for you to see you through A a box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through
Just a box of rain - wind and water - Believe it if you need it, if you don't just piss it on Sun and shower - Wind and rain - in and out the window like a moth before a flame
It's just a box of rain I don't know who put it there Believe it if you need it or leave it if you dare But it's just a box of rain or a ribbon for your hair Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there

Green, Green ass of Home
The old home town looks the same as I step off the train Meeting every train in my mind's eye till the man in mail came Hair like gold, lips like cherry It's good to fuck you, green, green ass of home Green, green ass of home, green green ass of home.
Only dream I know of is to be found hair like gold, lips like a cherry It's good to touch the green, green ass of home They'll all come to greet me, on the steps of my sweet dream It's good I dreamt the green, green ass of home I wait and look around me at the broken walls that surround me And out here I was on the ground.
There's a garden in the path of progress unharmed through winter's day break Then I'll touch the green, green ass of home They'll all come to greet me from the chains of the old dark hollow The green, green ass of home They'll all come to greet me on the steps, my sweet dream

If you like "Touch of Grey", you'll love "Tons of Steel" and you'll find it on the "In The Dark" album.
I'd have to say that although I'm not really a "Dead Head", I do appreciate the group in many ways.
My favorite: "Sugar Magnolia"
(I guess)
Shine On, bro. hehehe

The dead are the best band ever after Phil Collins and his band Genesis.

Phish are better than the Dead, but you have a point about Phil Collins and his band the Genesis. The great their dead are just a cheap imitation of Phish.

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord I've been waiting for this moment, all my life, Oh Lord Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord
Well, if you told me you were drowning I would not lend a hand I've seen your face before my friend But I don't know if you know who I am Well, I was there and I saw what you did I saw it with my own two eyes So you can wipe off the grin, I know where you've been It's all been a pack of lies
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, Oh Lord I can feel it in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord And I've been waiting for this moment all my life, Oh Lord, Oh Lord
Well I remember, I remember don't worry How could I ever forget, it's the first time, the last time we ever met But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, no you don't fool me The hurt doesn't show; but the pain still grows It's no stranger to you or me
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord...

Dude, I have to disagree.
The Dead are so much more than a band... But... Their music is just mediocre. Genesis is also mediocre.
The "best band ever" was The Beatles, hands down.
And everyone knows how I feel about RUSH. <-- Best trip music ever.
My Favorite Song of ALL time.

How about Lionel Ritchie? He was surely a musical genius.
I've been alone with you inside my mind And in my dreams I've kissed your lips, a thousand times I sometimes see you pass outside my door Hello, is it me you're looking for? I can see it in your eyes I can see it in your smile You're all I've ever wanted My arms are open wide Cos you know just what to say And you know just what to do And I want to tell you so much, I love you
I long to see the sunlight in your hair And tell you time and time again, how much I care Sometimes I feel my heart will overflow Hello? I've just got to let you know Cos I wonder where you are And I wonder what you do Are you somewhere feeling lonely Or is someone loving you Tell me how to win your heart For I haven't got a clue But let me start by saying, I love you
Hello Is it me You're looking for? Cos I wonder where you are And I wonder what you do Are you somewhere feeling lonely Is someone loving you? Tell me how to win your heart For I haven't got a clue But let me start by saying I love you

Beatles = whiney rip-off merchants - there were so many better bands during the 60s & 70s; Zappa & the Mother of Invention, Jefferson Airplane (at their best of course), Janis Joplin & Big Brother & the Holding Company and of course the Grateful Dead. The Beatles were just a boy-band with ideas above their station (hmmm, I don't really mean that, granted they did write some excellent songs, they're just really overrated). Genesis = sorry but Phil Collins should die! Awful, awful band! If crusty jism could make a noise, it would sound better than any Genesis song.

Genesis are fantastic, how could you say that?
I for one would like to boil Phil Collins in boiling oil whilst cutting his childrens heads off.

Well at least Phil Collins let his music be used in the film of American Psycho.
Unlike Whitney Houston - now don't get me started on her....
