I don't believe anyone should be put to death by the state. It sends a mixed message to would be murderers, and it's immoral. Anyone who commits murder has a mental problem. They need psychiatric help, not punishment.

Having been diagnost manic depression when i was 12 (i know.. bad grammer.. i'm tired) I can tell you that it is awful... however, I've never killed anyone. Infact I know a lot of awful damn depressed ppl who never killed anyone other then possible themselves. Its hardly an excuse.

Its not JUST depression, its post-partum depression, where this type of thing, in extreme ppd, DOES happen. There are alot of Americans with depression and they're not killing people. I don't condone ANY killing by anyone, and especially not in this case. I just wonder where the line is drawn.... according to Claude Rifat, no one has free will because everything we do and feel is just a reflection on the biochemistry of the CNS. I know that argument would just be chipping the tip of the iceberg on a whole nother conversation, but it seems that through psychology and science, people are trying to become blameless.

Well, it is probably a moot point anyway. I doubt she will even be found mentally fit to stand trial. But then again, it is Texas.

So are you saying that depressed people who throw themselves off buildings are doing it because they just feel like a quick 10 storey fall? Surely you must appreciate that there are various levels of depression, and you might not have experienced the depths of depression that others face. Not everyone who is diagnosed as depressed plumbs the ultimate depths of depression. Depression does result in suicides and in murders. To say that it doesn't is to relegate depression into the realm of a minor inconvenience.

Another sad thing about this case is the lack of support the woman got from her husband. She was having problems long before the fifth child, but he just kept knockin' her up.

personally, i think almost any outcome will end up in dissatisfaction on alot of people. Something so extreme and "unique" as this crime is a hard thing to deal with. If they put her to death, its kind of like settling the score, an eye for an eye.... but yea, it does send a mixed message to people. It says "Don't murder.... or we'll murder you." But then again, at the same time, if they stick her in the slammer it will say "you can kill, if you can live with the consequences".... and even still, if they just stick her in the looney bin for life, it says that if you have a mental affliction you have an excuse. I know these aren't exact concepts, but its just the general idea.

That has to be one of the most intelligent post i've seen on this board in a long time. Depression sucks and i wouldn't wish it on anyone but i would never use it as an excuse.

I agree, in that I also know how awful this disease can be. And I think it is obvious that this woman was beyond even the most severe depths of Major Depression; she was psychotic. You don't believe this woman killed her children because she was rational and chose to do it, do you? The bitch in S. Carolina that ran the car with her kids in it into a lake knew what she was doing. This woman didn't and now has to live with this horror the rest of her life. If anything, her asshole husband is guilty of some form of neglect; he knew what kind of condition she was in.
