My first mushrooms
    #3689302 - 01/27/05 06:19 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

These are my first mushrooms that i've found when actually searching for some. I think i have a good picture of them, and I'm hoping for some help in IDing them. A print is in the works atm, I'll get it posted soon as possible, but just from the pic what are your thoughts?
I found them under some fern plants in a heavily wooded area. They kinda smell like fish to me also. There were about 10 of them in a 1 ft. x 1 ft. area.

Those are Inocybes, and you should definitely not eat them. Most Inocybes contain high levels of muscarine, a toxin that causes a very unpleasant poisoning.

Identification of Inocybes to species (except for some distinctive species) requires a microscope. You say they smell somewhat like fish - would green (unripe) corn be an accurate description of the odor?

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the id, I looked in this book "Mushrooms of Northwest North America" and found a pic of some Inocybe fastigiata and they look very similar to what i have. I wouldn't say that they smell like unripe corn though.
I would say that the book that i have isn't very good for identifying most mushrooms... there is only one or two species of psilocybes in it.
I'm not too dissapointed that the mushrooms aren't psilocybes since they are my first i've found and its not the right season, but i have to say it was fun looking for them!
