Poison concerns
    #3688770 - 01/27/05 04:00 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I noticed that alot of people who hunt for shrooms that ask for ID's often have collected several species. Since psylocibin is absorbed through your bodies pours, aren't some mushroom toxins?

And I'm wondering about cross contamination... Alot of the people collecting several species handle all of them, so wouldn't that possibly spead toxins onto the shrooms they will be ingesting? Also, are these toxins easily spead from touch? I couldn't find information, so I wanted to ask.

Please don't lock this one.

I don't think so... I don't think there are any mushrooms SOOO toxic that just touching another mushroom would transfer toxicity..

I WOULD imagine if you had them all squished down together you may be at risk...

Simple solution- only pick what you know to be non poisonous

There is not a reliable recorded instance of any person ever being poisoned by handling a mushroom. There are some cases of contact dermatitis, especially with a few species of Suillus. These result in mild skin rashes that soon go away.

When collecting, keep different species separate from each other so that poison containing bits of mushroom don't contaminate the other mushrooms.

Happy mushrooming!

I was thinking maybe have a routine, like pick knows shrooms with your right hand and unknown with your left hand? I know it sounds silly but I'd be paranoid if I found out some shrooms were toxic and touching the good ones.

Also, the laws in the United States concerning shrooms are ridiculous! Land of the free indeed. :cuckoo:

Don't worry about being poisoned by handling mushrooms. I've been handling all of them I find for more than 25 years without any problems of any kind. The worst thing that's ever happened was touching one that was soft and mushy and having to wash that vile goo off.

Happy mushrooming!
