liberty cap nipples + tan.
    #3688369 - 01/27/05 02:15 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hello everyone in the shroomery webspace!

I am just wondering if anyone could clarify how dominant the nipple is on liberty caps, and if there are any without the nipple looking bit. i am also unsure on the colour of liberty caps.

i am asking this because i think that i may of just found my first patch, but i have no camra for photos. they were found in long grass (atleast 15cm), the stem was pure white and i was able to wrap it around my finger with no tearing. the temperature range for the last couple of days was from 8degrees C - 2 degrees C. i am sorry but i do not have any more information about this mushroom.

any help will be very helpful especially from experienced UK hunters.

do they bruise blue?

Just like any other mushroom the specimen samples from mushroom to mushroom will vary, sometimes greatly, even though it is the same species...

A spore print would help, and any other info.. Get a ruler out and measure it and try to get a print and notice some bruising, otherwise you are out of luck for a posative ID

i doubt you have them

lib season is probably over pretty much everywhere in the northern hemisphere by now.

as for your question on how "dominant" the nipples on the caps are, I think what you're getting at is asking if there are any lookalikes. yes, there are. you should verify all the characteristics of your specimens match with semilanceata. spore color, habitat/habit, and presence of a separable gelatinous pellicle whet wet are probably the most useful for IDing libs.

P. semilanceata does not always have a prominant papilus, though it usualy does.
there are certainly other papilate species aswell wich may co-occurr.

the color is highly variable and can be from olive greenish brown, to reddish brown, to deep tan/yellowish. they will fade to paler tan as they begin to dry.

there are other color variations, but these are probably the most common regaurdless of location.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Speaking of semilanceatas (aka liberty caps) Anyone have a print of that laying around that they would like to trade?

Id be really surprised if youd found them. almost all libs in england grow april-october. a few at other times, but mostly not.
