I've heard about this before. The best argument the right-wingers were able to give was "Clinton did it too."

LOL, i needed a good laugh. Yeah its pretty dispicable, but this stuff has been going on for decades with both parties and everyone knows about it. edit: of course, just because it has been going on for a long time doesn't make it right but people act as if this is new in an attempt to further their political arguments...which is also a strategy as old as time itself.

Great observation and thanks for posting the info.
Not really debate material however, as I doubt many right-wingers are going to be jumping at the chance to try and defend this action.

Right wingers would explain it, but it is much easier to pay someone to put a spin on it or cover it up alltogether.

Will any one of you please explain to this poor ignorant fool just what is wrong with hiring a professional writer to write something for you explaining your position on something. Please keep in mind the following facts: Maggie Gallagher is not a journalist, she is a columnist, and thus not paid for objectivity but rather subjectivity, i.e. her views. It is the responsibility of the government to explain it's policies to the electorate. This entails the hiring of spokespeople to professionally elucidate their positions. Ms. Gallagher did not in any way write anything that was contrary to the views she already held. The amount of money involved, approximately $20,000, is probably a reasonable fee for the services, and certainly not anything that could be construed as enough to cause her to go against her personal beliefs.
I eagerly await enlightenment.

Should they be able to use tax dollars to do so?

They always have. Speechwriters are paid. Consultants are paid. Press secretaries are paid. Just tell me why Maggie Gallagher is different. William Safire was a speechwriter for Nixon and Agnew. Paid with taxpayer dollars. What is the issue here?

Were they hiding the fact that they were paid, or did they disclose this fact openly?

What was she supposed to disclose? She is not a journalist. She is a columnist. I don't think she changed her opinion for money.

Not she, he.
He should have disclosed that he was paying her.
That I was paying her.
