Students arrested over violent stick figure drawings.
    #3687753 - 01/27/05 08:31 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Two boys ages 9 and 10 were charged with Felonies and taken away from School in Hand Cuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.

http://www.local6.com/news/4130302/detail.html

maybe the Police should have tasered then first.

Those boys should not have been arrested, they should have been taken outside by the teacher and kicked repeatedly in the face.

Why? If I make a drawing of me choking Bush/Kerry/Badnarik/Mary-Kate while analy raping him/her should anyone have the authority to charge me with a crime.

Yes, if you sent that picture to them it would be a threat.

Intimidating someone with threats of violence are and should be illegal.

From the article:

Quote:

Parents of both of the arrested boys said they thought the boys should be punished by the school and families, not the legal system.

Ocala police said they stand behind the decision to arrest the children.

"When an adult or even myself look at the picture looked at it at first I was thinking there is really not much to the picture or I would not be that scared by the picture those children drew," Ocala police spokesman Russ Kearn said. "However, we have to put ourselves in his mind and that's the bottom line here. It is his well-being and the way he perceived that picture to be. It actually put him in extreme fear and he was in fear for his life."

So, guilt is in the eye of the receiver, not in the intent of the doer. If you make a mean face at me, and I get scared, you should be arrested, yes? Welcome to the police states of america. Step 1, teach kids early to use the police instead of common sense.

The context might be different though. If I draw a picture of me stabbing you, walk up to you, stare you dead in the eyes, hand it to you, then walk away... the implied message is obvious.

What ever happened to Freedom of Speech/Expression? Arresting 9 and 10 year old aspiring artists on felony charges is flat out wrong. The message sent here is; 'children cannot express themselves according to our interpretation of the Constitution, but they can be charged with felonies even though no crime was committed and the fact that they are under 18'
I hope those kids still pursue art. I would buy the original piece of artwork from them for a substantial sum if it wasn't evidence.

In the 4th grade I used to sit in class with a comic book, undressing all the hot women with my pencil and pad.

I also used to draw aliens destroying cities and people being burned alive.

Ah, but those are the drawings that the teachers didn't see... They had nothing but praise for my other work.

These were retarded 9 year olds... maybe if they were adults or something it could be considered a threat but I don't even really agree with that. This is fucked up! That's about all I have to say about it.

It also depends on whether the kids have a history of violent behavior.

If they have already beat up 3 other kids, one of them so bad that he lost consciousness, and part of his vision permanently, then that's one thing.

If the kids have a history of play fighting and running around pretending to be "a karate man", then that is another.
