Workers's Rights

The recent post on a smoking ban has brought about this question.

When should the government have a responsibility to mediate company policies?

Suppose a person has worked at a company for 20 years. They have a retirement fund and other benefits coming to them if they aren't fired. This person is a Christian but they have started to research other religions and eventually become a practising Muslim. Now suppose the company is bought out and receives new management. The new management despises Muslims and desides to fire anyone who is a practising Muslim. It doesn't matter whether the person practises on the premises or not. If the employee refrains from observing any Muslim practises at work but engages in them at home he is still fired.

Should the government have the authority to step in and regulate such a situation?

If you don't like the Muslim reference substitute anything else you want, different nationality(black,hispanic,asian..), different religion, handicap, smoking...

Just as we don't want government interfering in our personal lives I feel business should also not have that right. I don't expect to be able to force a company to allow me to smoke or read the bible on their time. I do however expect that company not to have the right to interfere with my personal time.

if this is the reason for firing then that man would be very rich in a short time period. I'd call it a win-win situation for the paracticing muslim. It's against the law to fire on these grounds even in a right to work state.
