suddenly no more growth!
    #3685754 - 01/26/05 11:14 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I have had 12 jars in my incubator (80 F) for roughly one month now. They slowed a bit towards the bottom so I flipped them as recommended. This sped the growth back up, almost to complete colonization.

My problem is that for the past 4 days they have stopped colonizing completely. I have one jar that has had an un-colonized area smaller than an eraser head for 4 days now. They range from being almost completely covered on the bottom to having perhaps only 20% of the bottom colonized, but none of them seem to be growing. Can anyone help me? I wanted to case them this weekend.

Thanks in advance

That's quite a long time to be in incubation stage. One option you have is to get them out of the jars now, and carefully cut the uncolonized sections out with a sterile knife. Even better if you're going to case them, it won't matter if you have uneven cakes-it's all going to the same place in chunks anyways.

Good luck.

Are the holes covered with tape still, if so take it off and let them sit a few more days.

I think the reason that they have been taking so long is because twice now I have let the temperature drop in the incubator by about 10 degrees for a day or two. (First time was an accident, second I was moving) They definitely stopped growing after each of these times, but once I got them back up to temp they started right back up within a few days.

I don't have any tape on the holes. Any other suggestions? Thanks again

80F, you growing P. Mexicana? Cuz if it's Cubensis you want then 86 would be preferable.

This is not the only option and is the last option and not advised yet IMO.

Wait it out another week..if you birth them all un finished your gonna be losing some to contams likly. Another week will help. Its just being slow because its geting old and dried out...happens after a month of incubating...best to get them colonized as quick as possible by keeping them at a solid 84 degrees all the time (the myc will generate the other 2 degrees..give or take) and getting the moisture content right and not packing down the substrate. Also getting the tape off the holes and putting foil over the top.

Try and let them finish out as long as you can but once you can no longer hold yourself...follow the above advice.

No

You can drill holes in your lids instead of poking a hole.

You also have the option of not growing mushrooms.

DO you think he should give the jars a good shake?

Thanks for all of your help, but I just got too impatient. I cased all of my jars using the 50/50+ Tek. I attempted to cut out the uncolonized areas, but they were very shallow so I figured I wouldn't worry about it. Hopefully I won't get too many contams! Guess we'll find out here shortly. Thanks again
