Panaeolus subbalteatus hunting in NJ this spring and need info...
    #3684270 - 01/26/05 07:12 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I live in New Jersey and I've been wanting to go mushroom hunting for some time. I've checked out local wooded areas but never found anything of interest. I'd love to try and find some Subbs this spring but I don't know where to start.

Subbs grow on hay and or compost piles, so I guess I'll need to search in a rural area. I live in the suburbs, so I'm lost. Should I call up, or e-mail, a local Mycology group in order to get a more specific spot?

Of course I couldn't ask them for info related to Subbs for obvious reasons. Are there species/strains that grow in the same conditions as Subbs that I can ask about, so I can continue my real search?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
ShroomNoob03

ummmm no dude, azures grow in dunegrass and wood debris along the south WA/north OR coast during the fall and winter. they are not native to NJ and hunting for them there is useless.

Damn, I could have sworn I read that they do in an article on this site.

But whatever, are there any other psychoactive species I might have better luck finding?

Thanks for the reply,

Oh my bad, I have Azures on the brain from that picture on the main page. I was thinking of Panaeolus subbalteatus!

Whoops,

There are definetly heaps of pan subbs to be found.

I also feel that there are some other species around maybe its Psilocybe graveolens but I am not sure. I found some very old woodlovers at a garden I work for growing amonst the woodchips. I was doing fall leaf cleanup. So it was late in the year. They looked to have a slight blueing to them but it was hard to tell do to them being frozen and thawed a couple times and well past maturity.

Cow fields horse stables. Look around the feeding area where they set bails of hay/straw. They crap a shit load around the straw and you will find them under the tall grass amongst the heap.

ment no disrespect DH

I don't know of any Cow fields or Horse stables near me. Like I said I live in the suburbs. What should I do? I can't really hunt on public property, like on a farm. How can I find good grazing areas?

Thanks for the help,
ShroomNoob03

farms usually arent public property, and that is the danger.  and even if it were public, why cant you hunt on it?

i'm pretty sure in order to find good grazing areas you'll have to visit a farm, I dont know of too many wild cattle grazing in new jersey :smirk:

yeah you have to scope out those sorts of places yourself and make a decision.  thats pretty much you're only chance, though.

theres lots of threads about this.  you can always approach the farm owner and tell them its for a mycology course you're taking to collect specimens in a pasture.  and be sure to collect others

theres other options, try looking up threads.

Another option would be public horse stables and race tracks. Look for the big pile of shit where they dump the stable shavings. I haven't tried this myself, but after seeing Angryshroom's find from The Pile, I've been doing some scouting. There's a public park near me with stables that board privately owned horses. The best part about it is that there are woods leading right up to the back where they dump the stable shavings. I can park my car on a road about a quarter mile away and walk though the woods right to the pile. Hopefully I will make my first Pan subbs find this year.
