School Project on the Media
    #3679286 - 01/25/05 08:40 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hi
for my Critical Thinking & Writing class I want to compare American mainstream tv news programs or maybe their websites with other sources like british news, independent media sites, and what have you.

My hypothesis is that most americans are only exposed to a small number of issues and events in comparison.

Anyone have some good links I could use, or any advice, ideas, arguments, or whatever?

Thanks

If it were me, I would comment on the growing popularity of the internet and "blogs" and how that is actually influencing the biases of mainstream news.

Use the Dan Rather incident as a great example.

While mainstream news is intended to be unbiased, it is commonly known that the anchors and producers use the outlet to express personal opinions. Beyond that, some news anchors are even "wined and dined" by politically connected people as well. My point being that there is a TON of things going on behind the scenes that people are gradually finding out about through the public information network known as the internet. Whether they are biased towards libs or cons is debatable and not the point.

The Dan Rather case is really THE example of current events following this trend. It was basically a web-log website that brought down the story about Bush's military background and exposed it as a fraud. The extent of what people knew and when is still not fully known. Also, you can look at fox news. They are starting to become infamous for following the bias, not of the reporters but of the people who are tuning in. The radio is actually becoming another alternative to mainstream news. Although it is admittedly biased, they are providing Americans with further information than they commonly get in mainstream media and they were critical to the success of the Bush campaign.

My point is that Americans are more often using alternative forms of media than ever and that is, in turn, influencing how mainstream media is presented. It is a good contemporary topic to cover in your paper.
