canning jars - alternatives?

Okay, I live in the UK and as far as i'm aware canning jars do not actually exist on this island...so would it be possible to just use jam jars or something? I mean they must seal pretty tightly or else they wouldn't have food in them in the first place. Anyone know if this is okay or not? Cheers.
