When to Pin?
    #3678405 - 01/25/05 05:00 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hello.

I've got 3 half-pints that survived incubation. 2 of them are completely colonized; the third is very close to finished. It has just in the past few days whitened over the bottom of the jar, but the vermiculite is still visible through the mycelium.

My question is, can I remove them from the incubator and expose them to limited light and room temperature to begin pinning, or should I let the 3rd jar catch up? I've read before that the cake needs to be thoroughly colonized before birthing, but if I'm going to keep them in the jars another week while they pin, is it alright to do them all together?

Thanks in advance.

well it doesnt matter if u let the 3rd cake catch up or not if u want to have it grow all at once then wait if u want to have some grow and then some more later dont wait. as for pinning jus expose the fully colonized jars to light with the cakes still in the jars and u'll eventually notice pins forming

I'm a noob, but from what I've read not all strains pin easily when they're still in jars. For those that you want to pin, you might be waiting a long time if you want them to pin in jars, it may be better to just put them in your grow chamber to pin them. Also, 100% colonized does not mean just covered in mycelium, you have to wait a few days after the outside is colonized to be sure that the cakes get colonized all the way to the center. You may have to ask some others which strains are good at pinning in jars and which strains need to be birthed in order to initiate pinning.

Excerpt from one of my textbooks:
Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched.
I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.

If your doing PF tech, have patience and keep them in jars till you get good sized pins in them. Otherwise what 81 said.

when your going to pin, do you remove the lid of the jar? or do you just expose the closed jar to light. and how many pins do you need to remove the cake from the jar?

Just leave them in the incubator. They'll pin.

They need light to pin man.

Usually I like to wait about 5 days after the jar is colonized to birth them and put them in the fruiting chamber.

you take them out of the jar and throw in the terrarium to pin, or you leave them in the jar in the terrarium to pin
