Z-strain is just the GT strain with a different name.

Such an easy answer, but is it really true? Have you tried them all? Such and informative post deserves 5 shrooms for sure...

I have heard this from several growers before, that the Z is a renamed Golden Teacher. Very few people actually believe it is different, so I will believe the consensus that it is the same until I can verify it for myself... I can tell you that the GT strain is a decent producer, there is another thread about it here.

how did this become so? a vendor trying to hype his product up? if this is so, is someone selling the "z-strain" a credible source for spores? not bashing, but i just took advantage of spores101's promotional giveaway (still going on) and "he" pmed me reccomending the z-strain in response to an inquiry about the koh samui strain. where did this begin???

The Z strain was started at a rip off site called STP(Spore Trading Post) by the Keeper(Shane). He renames spores to hype his product up!~ The guy is a liar and a theif....his prices are terribly high and he prays on newbies that don't know any better...that find him in search engines on the internet...plus he used to advertise in High Times Magazine...to draw in newbies also. Basically the guy is a fricken low life.
I got into it with him several years ago here at the shroomery...he pissed me off so bad that I spred his Keeper Creeper strain all over the shroomery...its the Creeper strain that you see every where now...hehehe.
He tried to become a sponsor here at the shroomery...and sell spores for better prices to the shroomery members than on his rip off site. All the Mods and Admins voted and decided not to let him be a sponsor here...for the good of all.
I think...Thor banned him from the shroomery...if my memory serves me right.

Road,
Do you have any ideas as to what the Creeper strain possibly could be (or was originally)?

Yes
There are actually 3 different Cambodian strains...not one.
One is small fruit with almost a greenish tint colored fruit. Another is the main Cambodian strain that you see around.
I am almost sure the Creeper strain is the other Cambodian.
John Allen told me himself he brought back 3 different strains of Cubensis from Cambodia.
Some people think the Creeper is the Treasure Coast. I really don't think so.
Still trying to figgure it out.

This seems logical, and reinforces a feeling I had personally...

This does not. I have plenty of experience with the Treasure Coast, and it is not like any Cambodian I have grown...

Roadkill, I really don't think the Z strain is the golden teacher. The mature fruit do visually look similar, especially the cap, but having the good fortune of seeing both strains first hand, there are a couple notable differences, the biggest being the density of the fruit and the hollowness of the stipe.
The fruits from the golden teacher, IME, have been quite dense and weighty. The stipe is meaty and contains a small diameter pith. The Z strain, however, is extemely hollow and the fruits are very, very light. I mean extremely light, -even the largest ones! This is caused, IME, from the extremely hollow stems which when cut reveal a very large hole. Also, the GT has white stems, sometimes with some yellowing, but the Z strain has very yellow stems upon maturity-very reminiscent of the Aussie strain. The another feature of the GT is that it's veil comes off cleanly from the cap. The Z, however, has a very stubborn veil that will stretch and finally tear away from the stem or the cap or sometimes in between. Another feature is that as the GT matures, it's cap opens and flattens at a fairly normal rate, and won't grow much taller once the veil is torn, while with the Z, the veil will tear away as the cap is still almost completely closed, continues to grow much taller (up to 1/3 taller), and only opens and flattens out very late in maturity. Both strains grow singly, instead of in clusters.

As it matures, the veil stretches
Veils tearing
Cap opens at the last minute.
In the above pic, you can see how far down the stipe the veil is. The fruits grow about 1/3 taller after the veil tears.
By comparison, here are some GT pics
The Golden Teacher fruits are very large, meaty, and robust. Much more so than the Z.
Fruits stop growing taller once the veil tears. This one has been drying for 16 hours.
We have been lucky enough to observe both strains a number of times and although the look very similar, I do beleive they are different.
