heimia salicifolia, how can this plant be so hardy?
    #3675994 - 01/25/05 04:06 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Back towards the end of fall I ran out of pots and planted my spare heimia outside presuming it would die. This morning I checked on it and it's actually survived. Apart from some minor frost damage it looks like it's thriving!

The winters over here can be quite harsh. It's been exposed to constant -0 temperatures, frost, freezing rain and the occasional bout of snow.

So I'm wondering how the hell could a scraggly llittle tropical plant survive an english winter?

how interesting you mentioned heimia resisting an english winter...
yesterday i made an expedition into the country for herbs (brazil - summer, worst drought of the last 50 yrs) and i have found heimias (myrtifolia i _guess_), surviving in a very arid condition...
i was with a biologist friend of mine who told me heimia is originary of the andes, that helps explaining it a bit why this plant is so resistent...
