casing-add substrate tightly or loosely?

When adding the substrate to the casing container, do you want to put it in there tight? Or should it be rather loose? Afoaf has a lot of substrate for the small containers he is using..

That depends upon the substrate being used.

If you are using whole grains or crumbling PF cakes, do not pack it down. If you are using straw, pack it down as tightly as possible after spawning.

When the cat uses horse shit he likes to tamp it down gently after spawning.

Bulk composts , like dungs and worm castings ... I would say leave a little on the loose side , makes it easier for the myc to colonize quickly , thus reducing chances of nasties setting in .It also allows for better aeriation of water and gas exchanges ... IMHO
