Hello

Anyone knows if mycelium can survive longer periods below 32F / 0C?

What is lowest it can survive?

Thanks,
MF

I had some old jars which lasted through 40 degree weather for a few months.

Agar might be different though.

Well, I am pretty certain that myc can last a while at those temperatures, after all, you can store it in the freezer can't ya?

I think that that is what the commercial growers do with myc.

I have recieved mixed answers for the same question. A trusting source told me that it would diw if exposed to below freezing but then again there was a post on here sometime ago of a person in Kansas who came across an outdoor patch well after it had gotten to sub-freezing temps and it was in like Oct-Nov. Do a search. I'll be putting this question to the test in a few days so I'll let you know with a definitive answer.

I think if the Myc has gotten a good hold in the ground, for example, had a whole summer to colonize something- it will survive, maybe not the whole but enough of it. However, if you just toss it on top of the ground and don't bury it or shield it from the elements it will not survive to grow fruits next year. I think it will take too long for it to repair the damage. JMO

It should last the winter I'd bet. You'll probably need to add some nutes when time comes.

Which commercial growers, I mean which mushrooms do they grow?

Any other opinions who are even more certain myc can survive at 20-32F?

Freezer is not a way to store myc...especially of cubies...I dont know what species would be stored in the fridge but we're not talking edibles here..

Other cold weather outdoor species like ps cyans and azures will easily survive those low temps and thrive in it...whole different ball game there though..

Someone:
"after all, you can store it in the freezer can't ya?
I think that that is what the commercial growers do with myc. "

You:
"Which commercial growers, I mean which mushrooms do they grow?"

No one else mentioned commercial growers that I saw so I figured you were talking about him. And if he's correctly informed..its no cubie myc.

But freezer is what your talking about...same temps anyway...but no one is talking about storing..my post was just in response to him and the whole commercial growers doing that thing.. The second statment was to you though  Not sure if you feel capable but other species could do much better then cubies in those temps...still think the cubies would be ok though.

They'd be rather dormat but freezer burn might kill them :/

I'm sure that the myc. goes into survival mode and just waits it out...But does it dry out(doesnt use water so it shouldnt) is the real Q

HACKED  :dumblol: j/k

gl, intersting thread btw

No "someone" was mentioning it! Ow ok it WAS meant for him .. hmm, use the reply function!

Its just myc-waste from contamned jars I thronw in the compost pile or in holes the dog made for me..

I do feel capable for outdoorbeds of ps.cyanescens for example but thats not an issue. Yet..

Still very curious if there are specific temps which my cant survive. Thermal death is at about 106F. Now I wanna know what is the "frigid death" point!

Up late or early scatman?

Regards,
MF

I think that it depends on the species...like was previously said, azures would stay alive outside in below freezing temps. Really, myc is a pretty stong thing, but everything has its limits. If you threw humans into the arctic we'd die pretty quickly. Mushrooms evolved into a specific temperature range (probably because the enzymes that allow them to function work most effiecently in that temperature range.) So, if they survive, great, but judging from the posts, if they're cubies don't expect it. If they do: bonus and make sure to let us know!

edit* didn't mean to stomp on your end there IGnosticAbhorI.*
