I noticed you guys like to mess around with that nasty desiccant shit, Why don't you guys just go to wally world and buy a food dehydrator and cut the heating element even though leaving the element would speed up the process and you guys wouldn't notice a difference in taste and the sort. Better yet this one has a temp control of 95 degrees which is well within the safe zone http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=1120727

Its been done and said many times in these forums before. Personally i dont use a desiccant, I live on the edge of a desert so i have no need. I just place them on some foil with a fan running and they will get cracker dry. But using a desiccant shouldn't change the taste of you mushrooms whatsoever.

You think I'm made of money? Dehydrators are all frills.
I just dried some portabellas the other day with my fan and drying screen. Took 10 hours.

Not everyone does that at all. Desiccant is just a less noisey simple way for a few dries. Not those who continously dry. A number of us use dehydrators..with and without the element. Me...I use a few with the element..no probs.
