how much light?
    #3672534 - 01/24/05 03:29 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

i have a question on light and casing. i plan on making a pretty big casing out of a tupperware container that has translucant sides. will this work? after mycleiem has taken over the casing layer above....can i place the whole tupperware container by a window(with adaquate amounts of sunlight) to intinate pinning? how long should i do this for(days?)

thanks a lot guys

beav

You want to cover the sides with plastic or paint to prevent pins from forming on the edges. Natural daylight is fine, but if you leave it just sitting out by a window, the casing will surely dry up unless you plan on having it covered.

alright, thats a good idea to paint the sides. i guess i should cover it with some clear celifan(the clear plastic stuff, i can't spell im a lil retarded)? and do i need to release co2 during the light period?

You need to cover it with something dark, not clear. The idea is to keep light out from the sides of the container. Yeah, fanning it several times a day is how you'll release C02.

Good luck

I do not understand the reasoning behind this. How is side pinning detrimental?

:mushroom2:  You can't harvest mushrooms that grow down very easily, now can you?  :mushroom2:

Like Kingboomer said, harvesting is a pain when they pin on the sides. Also, you want your casing to expend its energy in the horizontal casing layer for more even pinning and flushes...not growing every which way.

If your container has a dark or opaque lid, then fruit with the container upside-down... Lid on the bottom.

You can make a cardboard sleeve that wraps around your container, so you can still peek inside and see what is growing, without disturbing the cake.

how about lining the inside of the container with tinfoil, that should make it opaque.

On a related note. when should jars first be given light? Should the get only dark for the first 3 weeks or should it always get some light?

supply light from their birthday on (unless doing casings. birth the jars, prepare casings, and leave incubating until mycelial valleys start poking through top, when the mycelium has repared itself... introduce light) . no light while colonizing.

:mushroom2:  It would be better to paint the outside with black paint or use duct tape.  the mycellial growth would break down the foil.  :mushroom2:

What is the acceptable level of no light. I mean what if I were to look at it say once a day, which would give them maybe one minute of light a day. Would that ruin things? Or should I just not bother checking on things for at least 2 weeks?

daily checking is fine. as long as the spot they're in recieves no light, except that of checking, all is well.

duct tape works great for blocking out light on those translucent containers. i use it from clear casing trays to plastic beer cups for seedlings. duct tape is very handy.

no offence but i don't know what you are talking about? cover it with some dark? i need to introduce my casing to light so why would i use something dark to cover it?

and my question about co2 is about during the lighting period, not how i would get the co2 out....so do i need to release co2 while its in the light period?

thank you

I misread your post and thought you were talking about covering the sides with clear plastic, not the top.

Use something hard and clear for the lid. To remove co2..3-6 times a day (or more)..pop off the top and fan using the lid for like 15-30 seconds. You can also use a tupperware lid that isnt clear if you cut out the lid leaving a firm frame and saranwrapping over the hole you cut. Can still fan with it and pull it off and on easy and light will still get through. Also just covering the sides up to the casing top will help so light can get through the sides of the tub but can only hit the top of the casing surface.
