Sugestions for keeping container warm during winter
    #3671998 - 01/24/05 01:21 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Any ideas on how I can maintain a safe temp. for growing during the winter seasons. I would grow upstairs where it stays warmer, but the room won't be much over 73-77 degrees.

I am trying to prevent any fire hazards, and can not afford to keep the heat in the high 80's for a month and half while growning.

I have concidered hot hands, since my mom bought a case of them during the y2k threat (farce). Not sure if they are still good though.

Thanks for any sugestions.

I think your a little confused.
Those temps are perfect for growing during the fruiting stage.

Build an incubator for colonizing your jars.
This is where you want 81 to 83 degrees F...during the colonization period.

Good luck!~

I especially like this one:

http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm

Two Sterilite/Rubbermaid tubs: about $5
Fully submersible adjustable aquarium heater of right size: $15

Cheap, efficient, stashable.

Excerpt from one of my textbooks:
Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched.
I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.

You guys do realize that the controller knob for setting the heat should be above water right... The whole heater isn't designed to be totally submerged like that. Just the glass tube should be submerged.

Well, not all of them... You are going to kill some-one with that incubater TEK.

Road: Dig the idea of putting smaller one in a bigger one and using the big lid. A little less conspicuous than having a towel over both of 'em. Also, does anyone who uses this tek bother to unplug the heater before reaching in there to adjust the temp? I don't, but was wondering just how dumb I am to do it that way. Another thing, since the jars are sealed up with the rubbermaid lid, is it necessary to sometimes exchange the air in the incubator? I doubt those things produce that much CO2, but maybe it would be enough that you should at least dump out the CO2 now and then. Should I bother?

I found a really nice heater on ebay w/ remote control for around 16usd. If I go that method that is what I will try, I just got to convince the gf to let me grow them again, or hide it really well..... sucks not having your own house.
