Meditation Question
    #3669996 - 01/24/05 12:13 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hey, I'm relatively new to meditation, but lately I've been noticing something odd about it. It seems every time I begin meditating, within 5-10minutes a mild headache ensues. Within 12-15 minutes, I often get flooded with a full blown head shaking headache. It immediately brings me out and the headache stays with me. Any answers as to why this MAY happen? Thanks for any help!

You may be focusing your eyes too intensely, especially if you are focusing them on a point within three or four feet of you. Try to unfocus your eyes instead if this is the case.

Yea, that's what I was suspecting. I am trying to unfocus my eyes, but they seem to strain naturally. With a bit of practice I'm sure I can get them to relax and unfocus. Thanks for the help!

I used to have that problem and now use closed eye meditation in a kneeling or cross-legged position with a mat. You could either have a problem with your eyes or if sitting could be squashing your sciatic nerve (big nerve running through your ass).

bingo. i'm quite sure that this is the problem.

or you are just horribly mis-made as a person and will never experience enlightenment.

actually meditation can be practiced in any position with eyes open or closed.
the posture is important as a matter of approaching the work.
one prepares the posture with a kind of dignity and sense of purpose, and then one gets to the next stage.

fixing attention is often a matter of re-fixing attention, and relaxing is often a matter of re-relaxing. This is like a layer of mentation overtop of the original posture arrangement layer of mentation.

the layers are like stages of a process (like stupas, like castes, etc a pleasing and stable division).

what I found interesting about your report was the mention of shaking.
shaking and other vibrations relate to what is loosely called joy, and with medically may be feedback between the motor and sensory cortex. I found it interesting as a clue that you are working ernestly at this project, and I think if you keep it up you will be happy with the venture.

Maybe you are starting to release some energy that is blocked. Perhaps before your meditation you could try some energy work with your hands lightly touching your where your head aches. Focus on releasing the energy or having it flow out of your head into your hands and moving it through your body with your breath. Good luck!

Yeah I'll try all the suggestions, thanks alot. Hopefully I can find the problem and fix it soon so I can move on to digging deeper into myself and maybe one day reach the enlightenment I so seek.
