Would rock salt be an OK desiccant?

No, the rock salt would need direct contact with the source of moisture as opposed to desiccant that never comes in contact with the mushrooms, and dries by removing moisture from the air.

what if i put the shrooms in a jar full of salt, and shook it up?

My guess? The salt would seal the mushrooms, creating a thick outer skin that would end up sealing in moisture and eventually leading to rotten mushrooms.

You can pick up a nice size container of Damp-Rid at Kmart for pretty cheap, have you tried that yet?

My little guys have been air drying for a while, but i'm not sure it's getting the job done.

I'm gonna go out and get some desiccant as soon as i can. Thanks for the tip.

No problem

Are you fan drying them or are they just sitting out? If you rig up a small housefan and some sort of racks to lay your mushrooms out on, you can get them really dry and finish off the process with final desiccant dry. This will save you $$ in desiccant also.
