my pf cake is dried out
    #3668298 - 01/23/05 05:05 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

i think i left my jars in the pressure cooker for too long. the mycelium has grown to about the size of a quarter and doesn't seem to be getting any bigger. the brown rice and verm is a light brown color and seems to be lacking in water. is there anyway to safely add more water to the substrate so the mycelium has something to grow with?

How long has is been since the growth halted?

If it doesn't pick up again, you'll have to make a new batch and try to get the moisture correct next run.

well, i'm trying a little experiment. i'm going to try to rehydrate the cakes by injecting them with sterilized water. I boiled some water, then let it cool. I sterilized an empty syringe by filling it with the boiling water and depressing the plunger a few times. I put a whole syringe full of water in each 1/2 pint jar, injecting some into the center of the cake and some against the side of the jar to let it run down the sides. so far no sign of infection and the mycelium seems to have started to grow again. I'll keep you updated on how these rehydrated cakes turn out

you can buy sterile water for injection if you are that worried. boiling water wont make it very sterile IMO
