Would this terrarrium work
    #3667904 - 01/23/05 03:24 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Not sure how thick the layer of perlite should be , im thinking 2 inches. And im not sure about the hole(s) , im thinking about 1 inch above the perlite and how many holes should there be? the temp will be kept around 75. Its a 20 qt plastic box.

You made a drawing of a basic terrarium and asked us if it will work.

Do you think airplane manufacturers draw up a picture of a plane and wonder if it will fly? No

Typically, in a PMP, there is airflow created by using an airpump and the CO2 is pushed out of the terrarium. For the one you are making, a friend would suggest putting one hole per side about 1 inch above the perlite layer (yes you have the right idea) for the CO2 to escape, and perhaps fan it once a day. Also, 2 inches of perlite may be a bit excessive. 1 inch should be all you need!

Be gentle guys, this is the "Beginners" forum...

At-least this guy isn't claiming to be an expert prior to a common question.

My advice: Get a light on top, not on the side. Make sure the light is not close enough to over-heat the tank. Cut a hole in both the left/right side, about 1" wide and about 2" from the bottom. Cover it with tyvek or stuff it full with polly-fill. Put two more holes on the top lid, left/right, and treat the same.

With all of that pearlite in there, you will have enough humidity, and with the holes, you shold not have to fan, except possibly once a week for good measure.

It is important that the holes be covered well with something that will not allow contamination in, and will still let air out. Not reccomended, but you can also layer about three coffee filters one on top of another, and tape it over the holes... tape it well. (Last resort... It will let in as many contaminants as fanning would!)

My lid is white and isnt clear so should i make my own lid out of plexiglass or something?

Why you gotta be a little dickhole? :nonono:

Anyways...I think that LaugingJims advice would prove to do well. Be sure not to place the light too close to the terrarium.

White is fine, as long as light shines through it...

Green houses use white plastic to diffuse light and make it balanced.

If you need something a little more clear, that is cheap... use a garbage bag. Most garbage bags have an "Anti-bacterial/Anti-fungicide" in the plastic. That should stop any contamination from forming on the lid/bag... It may also be easier to poke holes in, and tape stuff to. (Not the best choice, but it will work.)

Plexi-glass would be more ideal.

Also, if this is a glass tank that you can't put holes in the side... Then make four holes in the top, one in each corner. Stuff two, and put a 1" wide tube/pipe in the other two, so it reaches close to the bottom. Then stuff those pipes with the same ammount of polly-fill, or tyvek covers. The flow will be the same... hotter air will rise out of the upper holes, while cooler air will come in through the pipes near the bottom.

Example: PVC pipe, Fishtank hose, Garden hose, Washing machine drain hose... etc.

If you use a bubble wand under the pearlite, with the cakes resting above on another lid, then you have the typical poor mans pod... and no holes are needed. (I missed the part about you having a pump...)

Search google for "Poor Mans Pod", Agar has that link on hand... if he peeks in to this thread!
