An outdoor grow method?
    #3665181 - 01/22/05 10:52 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Hi, i was reading up and saw moe's outdoor growing method....i was wondering if i could actually grow a bulk amount of shrooms outside..and if i do what kind is best used? for temperatures between 65-100 degrees...i know i will have to make the cakes inside....but how many cakes should i make and how big of a hole should i make...to produce upwards of a pound of dried shroooms...i really wanna do this come summer time so i have plenty of time to await your responses....thanks

Try searching the forums. I would suggest reading bulk indoor cultivation for yields. etc etc...I've been poking around here for a couple of months... there's a lot already written about what you've asked. I'd say a 2'x2' area would yield that much (and even a little more than that if done properly), indoors (outdoors would be comparable), grown on straw and dung (psilocibe cubensis). (Mods, if you read this feel free to correct me up or down on that number.) Also, grain spawn would be easier than cakes...cause you'd haveta grind up cakes. Try getting pre-sterilized grain spawn from one of the shroomery's sponsors if you're interested....but keep reading.
Profit is a good thing, and can motivate people to a point, however, it is like growing a plant, or being a farmer. There is always risk, and in the end you really need to enjoy the process to get the most out of it. Everything else is just a bonus.

i'm also intentioned to grow outdoor, and i read that january and february is the right time to start thinking of it practically. so i have a question: when you say "dung" you mean cow or horse shit, right? should i prefer fresh shit or dry shit? and what shall i do with it? pressure cook, maybe, in the same cooker i use for my food? uhmmm...

Dry.
If you are going to use it outdoors, just soak it, there is no need for further threatment.

thanx anno, since you are the author of the tek i was referring to, i'm happy that it was you to answer. but your tek is about growing azurescens on wood chips, i was planning to grow cubensis. do you think i need dung for cubensis or can i do it with woodchips as well? and another question: your timetable is based on an annual cycle, while people on this forum just wait the right climate and the whole cycle is about 1 month, so shall i start the home phase now for going outdoor in spring or wait a little more and have everything done in spring/summer?

azures use wood, psilos use grains. a good millett birdseed cake then spawned to dung would work great

yes, just the kernels, I remember reading in one of Joshua's posts about his garden, eventually I think he had around 6" of substrate, but he dug out a couple extra inches, put down a layer of perlite with one of those weed cloths over that with the substrate on top of that. Hope it helps

The "A" strain does very well for outdoor grows.
Very forgiving, has large fruits with thick stems.

There is a good outdoor log for you to read.

Good luck!~

I have a question reguarding outdoor growing:
Lets say you're a lazy (Also a dick) person like me. Do you sterilze your compost even though its gonna be grown outside? It seems to me like cows/elephants/bovines etc. don't sterilize their poo, yet shrooms seem to pop up in it anyways.

The compost I'm refering to is Scotts 3n1. Has anyone had success growing outside w/o sterilizing their bulk sub?

well so far I haven't got into outdoors yet but I've been reading for a while and want to get started as soon as the f'n snow goes away.
I've seen successful posts about outdoors saying that it is or isn't necessary. I do remember that someone said that if you sterilize poo is isn't as contam resistant as if you just pasteurized. They way I doo things, I would rather be safe than sorry, so even if it is outside I would still pasteurize.

Joshua is a top notch mycologist...IMHO

I have a list of about 20 mycologists that I look up to...he is on that list.
Anno, Workman, Una, mycofile, pleezr, Joshua, CLuB99, SixTango , eatyualive, Olgualion, Alien, hippie3, agar, Shirl and plus several others that I just can't think of at this time (brain fart)...lol
If you have the time...do a search on each person...and read all their posts...I have.

Any information that Joshua posts is well worth reading.

I have met him several times...very smart young man with a great heart.
He is always welcomed in my home.

Sterilize it...as in Pressure cook it.
Don't pressure cook poo!~

Pasturize it.

There really isn't a need to pasturize it in outdoor grows.
I would suggest leaching(soaking) it though.

Good luck!~
