bad situation
    #3666200 - 01/23/05 03:48 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

okay... i grow a lot of cactus... some of them are grouped in these large bowl type pots, and were happy... until I walked outside and looked and one of the pots, and it had these weird mushroom looking things all over the soil around the cacti... On of them was dead, the others seemed okay.

To describe the mushrooms I would say they are about 1/2 cm tall, little tan colored blobs, about the diameter of a pencil... some of the mature ones had opened up (the top was gone) and there was a bunch of little black seed like things... which is weird because i didn't thnk that they had seeds...

Anyways the soil was completely colonized with mycelium about 2-3 deep, and the cacti were almost stuck in the soil... after an hour i dug up each cactus rubbing off most of the dirt..

I don't know what the mushrooms were or what they were doing, and I don't know what i should do to repot them, without getting another pot infested with the little fungi.

any advice is appreciated.

I had most likely the same or similar species of mushrooms growing in a few of my cactus pots and in one of my plant pots, never found them to hurt the plant itself so i think the cactus dying was just a coincidental occurence. They are relatively annoying to me, but never caused harm. They only happened to appear when i used this one bag of soil i got from Home Depot, I suspect it was contaminated with the mushroom.

You did the right thing in pulling up the cactus and repotting it (with preferebly clean soil in a new, or atleast washed the pot it came from) if you wanted to get rid of the mushroom growth, cause they'll just fruit from time to time. I sometimes worry about my nephew eating them out of the pot when he comes over. So I ended up doing the same thing to a few of them.

you can have the same thing happen to plants in your window sill.
it's very common and home depot has nothing to do with it. they are evil but not always to blame.

you could get the spores from anywhere, and if the plants are outside, there ya go.
the most common type of house plant mushrooms are these little bright yellow guys, the name escapes me.(i'll edit later)
i have had some luck scoarching the mycelia with a dawn dish soap/h20 mix.
but this is not 100% effective. cleaning and repoting is going to be the best thing to do.

but if you put them back in the same spot outside, you could possibly expect the same thing to happen.

My plants were never in my window sill, they were however outside but they were together and sat in the same environment, the only difference between the two that got the mushrooms was where the soil came from that they were potted in.

Seems to me the only variable for this one instance. But your points are still valid none the less, as I'd have argued the same thing if i didn't have the same thing happen.

i spoke about a window because i had a plant in my window, which was open, and that plant got the little yellow mushrooms, then a few months later the plants on the floor the room got the mushrooms. this was before i realized that the spores came through my window grew in the houseplant, sporeulated, and then all the plants in radius had the mushrooms, it was kinda funny in retrospect.

and your soil was probably the source, but you could have gotten the same problem with any type of soil or by just being outside. it like the chicken and the egg.

That's true, but my perplexatoin is why only the ones with that soil got the mushrooms and the other pots sitting in the same spot as the ones with the mushrooms, well practically same spot as two pots can't occupy the same exact space at the same time, did not. It's still certainly possible to get contamination from just being outside, but I don't really think that happened in my case.

None the less, I should of tried to pastuerize the soil before using it. I learned from that one.
