Wormwood Essential Oil
    #3662987 - 01/22/05 04:28 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

A friend of mine has some wormwood essential oil. He says the consistancy is more like silly putty than oil. Has it gone bad? Is it still safe to use?

His plan was to add it to a bottle of absinthe to increase the wormwood content. Will it disolve in the absinthe considering the consistancy of the oil? Is this even a good idea? Will it be drinkable afterwards, or horribly bitter?

It shouldn't be as viscous after it's added to whatever it is you want to add it to. It seems that the remaining solvent that kept it from being viscous has evaporated off. If you see my thread on simple distillation you will see the wormwood pot-residue that's left, it smells not half bad, but probably tastes horrible. The residue was very oily for a while, and today has begun to seem more viscous, this is because of the loss of some volatiles as well as left over solvent.

I probably wouldn't add more wormwood oil to a bottle of absinthe already containing thujone, but that's just me. It's probably not a horribly dangerous thing to do, but I don't think normal absinthe needs anymore thujone than it already has, there are better things to try to get an effect from than thujone.

As for the taste, it certainly won't make your absinthe taste any more plesant than it already does.
