Best Humidity Set-ups for Casings?
    #3662350 - 01/22/05 12:42 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

ok so i'm pretty much doing only casing lately.  I was wondering what are the best methods for humidity.  The chamber they are in was originally built for cakes.  It consists of a 2 inch layer of perilite on the bottom with about a half inch of water, and a Tropic Aire humidifier/air exchanger.  But it always seems to dry in the chamer?  The Tropic Aire doesn't seem to do anything?  I have access to a cool mist humidifier and am willing to build on of those 3 pop bottle systems.  I am just wondering what is the best to maximize flushes for casing.  I am doing 50/50 with 2 fully colonized cakes in a 6 by 6 container and only have 5 mushies growing they are HUGE but still with coir i was expecting more.  Also i have hydrated lime what is the best way to incorporate it into the mix?  Thanks :smirk:

Just use a well sealed terrarium, mist the walls and casings for humidity. You don't need that messy perlite stuff or complicated humidifier setups to be successful with casings.

Wow you say nothing but hand spraying and a tight terrarium?  But as of now i with perlite and the tropic aire the humidy is to low.  I am willing to do any method to up the humidity and maximize flushes.  I'm really disappointed with my first flush of a coir/verm two cake casing.  You think i should remove everything and let the casings sit in an empty terr with nothing attatched?  Thanks for you prompt response.

In my experience definitely, you can do without that stuff. The trick for me has been to eliminate floor space in the terrarium. What I mean by this is: If you have several small cakes or casings sitting inside a rather large terrarium with plenty of volume leftover, you have to fill that extra space with humidity-what else. Perlite is so-so, I mean some have success with it but I haven't. It's really hard to reliably fill that remaining volume with correct humidity.

I choose containers that take up most if not all of my floor space of the terrarium, therefore only the walls are left to keep moist. This keeps the humidity at 90-95% with mistings, and I can turn that up or down depending on rate of misting for pinning, fruiting.

Ok don't mean to drag this out, but basically what I mean is: Get rid of that extra volume if you can so you have virtually zero bottom surface except casings + containers. You'll find that your humidity just became much easier to control. I'll try to post a pic this later, gotta take of for the afternoon.

Thanks again Diver!!  Thanks for dragging it out thats the way i learn!  I don't have any floor space not covered i have 4 casings ragining in size from 6x6 to 8x13 leaving no space they are all butted up to eachother so i don't know what the prob is???? :frown:

True!~
You can get away with doing that.

But you forgot to tell him to fan them good.
If you use this type of set up...fan them at least 3 times a day.

Good luck!~

Thanks for the added advice RoadKILL!!!  So we've determined that this will be sufficient but is it optimal?  I am willing to take pretty much any measueres to ensure that the humidity is at a level that will maximize flushes and create an enviroment more fungi freindly.  Do you know of any other methods (pmp, cool mist, ultrasonic) that would be better then just p :smile:lacing them in the rubbermaid tight and spraying.  I may not always be home to do this 3-5 times daily so i wanted to construct something that will aid me when i'm not around.  I can and will make the time if need be i just wanted a little something to really ensure success.  Does it make any differnece or lower the rh by having a flourensent affixed to the inside lid of the terr?  Thanks again for everyones help

Yes you could do better than that.

You could buy one of these...and put a cool mist into it and you wouldn't have to fan as much.

Good luck!~

if your using coir/verm you dont need to pH buffer with hydrated lime
only if your using peat/verm, since peat is acidic
i would still throw a bit of crushed oyster shells in the mix [pet store], check Ryche Hawks 50/50+ tek for a ratio. this will help neutralize the acidic byproducts the  :mushroom2: creates when they grow, so you will get better 2nd/3rd flushes.
if youve got alot of casings id highly reccomend a martha w/ an ultrasonic and v400 coolmist.  check out 13eetlejuice's setup.

So the wick won't work? Its by sunbeam. I only have four casings? that would all easily fit on one self? Thanks again for all your help!

I think casing them in baking pans and just misting the sides of my rubbermaids is just working fine...I have had a 25 gram shroom growing that way...oh yeah it was wet but it was big.
