Psilocybe semilanceata (liberty caps) are one of the harder species to0 grow in vitro. This is a fall weather mushroom mostly int he northern hemisphere and they grow with their mycelia atached tot he roots of wild grasses such as sedge and tall trank grasses.
Very few people have ever got them to grow. I think Workman got some to fruit outdoors in oregon, but then again, that is the region they grow well in the PNW from Bandon,Oregon to British Columbia in the north end of the PNW.
mj
Gartz and I also grew a few in a flask in a lab.

I will be attempting the liberty caps outdoors rather than in vitro. During the right season as well.
I dont understand why virginia doesnt have any naturally growing magic mushrooms our climiate is amazing for plants and mushrooms a like. I see all kinds of mushrooms on my journeys and never any magics (not even in the right areas for magics) but im saying mushies are all over. It boggles my mind. Possibly an undiscovered species of magic paneaolous on the east coast possibly MJ?? Porbably not i suppose.
Anyway thanks to everyone keeping this thread alive, I will post some pics of my journeys when i get my scanner up and working. Yes i use a 35 millimeter cannon, no digi. Im a recreational photographer :p.
Uncle mike i will keep this thread updated as much as possible with new info. Also we may not find the abundance of wild magic mushrooms, but i urge you to try and read up on cubensis cultivation, outdoor teks included. We have a perfect enviroment from march til september or october to fruit outdoor beds. This is not sketch at all, and does take a little effort.

I live in NOVA and I have found a couple shrooms. A white Amanita looking one of good size and several of the psylocibin ones but didnt know how to dry them. The white one I was unsure of and did not eat.

Dammit, I hate to be that guy to necro-bump a thread like this, but nobody commented in my last thread.
Are there any active members that can give me more recent reports of VA mushies?
This thread seems to be the most comprehensive for my area. I hope it catches someone's eye.
I've been seeing some inactive varieties of shrooms popping up recently but nothing I'm looking for yet.

have you looked through the yearly ovoid threads?
the season is winding down, but there are definitely still stragglers out there. this is the species you want to primarily target in VA, followed by Panaeolus cinctulus and Gymnopilus species...if you're really into a scavenger hunt, you can try for Psilocybe caerulipes toward the end of summer/beginning of fall.
