Life without Mirrors
    #3661120 - 01/22/05 12:16 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Imagine a world where there was no way to see your reflection. You could never see yourself. You had no way of knowing what you look like except to ask someone. What do you think the world would be like?

You would feel good simply based on how you feel, instead of how you look having effect over how you feel.

Id like to hear what you guys think

then you still would see yourself- your perception would rearrange levels of abstraction- you would develop a sense of self through others.

People who are affected emotionally by how they look would then look to other people's perception of them instead. Why would seeing yourself change anything? Not everyone cares about what color light they reflect.

yea but most people do feel that way. You cant tell me you go to work/school without looking in the mirror first. Why? because you are concerned how you look. Why? Why is how you look so important to most of us?
Who cares what we look like, Id like to be respected for my knowledge, and if people wont talk to you because you dont look a certain way, eveyone looses. Think of all the people who you wouldnt normally speak to because of their appearance. You can say, "oh I dont so that, everyone is equal in my eyes", but we all know thats not the truth. Everyone encounters a point in their life when they may have passed judgement on someone due to their appearance. I think we would be less concerned of whats on the outside and more concerned with whats inside...

I can and do. I go to school to learn, not to look good. I don't even own a mirror. I do wear nice clothes and try not to stink, but that's because I actually like those clothes and hate smelling bad.

you made quite a few assumptions there.. If someone is ugly, then it makes it all the easier for me to approach them. If someone is beautiful but unapproachable, then the unapproachability proves that nothing would come of conversation there anyway.

yes I did make a few assumptions that I believe to be true for most people, including my former self. Just trying to gain another perspective on the mirror and man.. Thanks

I know what you mean about being unapproachable, but that can be beautiful or hideous. whatever makes you feel that someone is
unapproachable. Where do these feelings come from? I think feeling of being inadequete yourself. Why because you know what you look like, and you compare the two... What do you think??

I think not much would change because we would all still judge others by how they look. attractive people would still be given more opportunities, homeless people would still wear foor-encrusted second-hand sports jackets, we woud all still choose our clothes based on how they look on other people. people with big black eyes would still be gawked at by passers-by. ethnic minorities would still be obvious.

how about this: every day you could look totally different, say based on what dreams you had the night before. your physiognomy would completely shift to reflect what you'd looked like in your dreams, and so if you had nightmares you'd look small and scared, et cetera. so our identities, and the reactions we got from people, would be waaay more dependant on the clothes we chose to wear, and other stuff more under our control... (oh wait, the way we look in real life isn't under our control anyways) ... but the difference is, we'd all know that this really hot girl we wanna get it on with could wake up the next monring and be butt ugly. so we would be less inclined to judge people on how they look, knowing how transient it is.

uh yeah, how about that.

no reflections, cameras and water both use light reflecting back to a source to create an image of you.

well if there were no reflection of light there would be no vision period. and so we would live in complete darkness, like a mole rat.
we would be naked and have little pointed faces.

what about blind people? They never see themselves, and yet I get the feeling they're insecure about themselves as well. What if someone told them they're ugly? Would it not bother them at all?

I would feel insecure too if I was blind and everyone else could see.
What do you think?

I think the blind person would know he or she is more beautiful on the inside than the person making the remark. Does 'ugly' mean anything to blind people? Sure, it means not attractive, but that's subjective - the blind person cannot see beauty or the beast.

If I were without sight it would mean nothing to me.

I seriously doubt that...

You think that TV has made so little and impression over your life that you would be the same person without having grown up with it? Same for mirrors... I dont think so..
