Get them at your local shoe store.
I got some shoes yesterday and I looked at all the shoes on display and realized each pair had come in a box with one of those little packs. I asked what did they do with them and the lady said they threw them out. Dozens of them! And on the shelves every box has one inside so just head to your nearest shoe store, look around a bit and grab some!

Well I'll just point out that a pack taken out of a box of *new* shoes would also be *new*.
And it's not like they have a time limit on them or something. If you bought one from a supplier, where do you think it is before you buy it? Sitting on the suppliers shelf 'sucking moisture out of the air'?
After drying my shrooms, I keep them in a sealed canning jar with a pack, works great and the price is right not to mention the ease in acquiring it.

They sell silica gel Here. Wether that is the best price or not I do not know.
You can probibly find it locally at a arts/crafts store since it is used to dry flowers. Mabey even a good flower shop would have it.

Would selica gel be an effective way to completely dry your mushrooms, instead of buying some dessicant?

is silica gel bad to eat? When I saw this thread I went into the closet and ate a couple packets, is it bad? I thought itd feel weird for my stomach to start drying out til i shit them out, please help me:(

yeah i know it's a dessicant, but isn't it some other type?
Would the amount it takes slica gel to dry shrooms be the same amount of dessicant it takes? In other words, how many of those packets wuld you need?

All I know is that it dries shrooms. I believe the original poster was concerned with storage, not drying. A small sack, perhaps tied up in cheesecloth, inside a sealed container should keep those shrooms dry.

There are two types of silica gel:
- One has a built-in color indicator, bright blue crystals of cobalt chloride which act as moisture indicators. As the silica gel begins to absorb moisture from the flowers embedded in it, the cobalt chloride crystals will indicate this by turning light blue and then pink. When the silica gel has absorbed up to 40 % of its own weight in moisture, it will no longer be effective in removing moisture from flowers. At this point, the cobalt chloride crystals will indicate this state of super saturation by turning white. The silica gel must then be reactivated before it can be successfully used again.
- The other type of crystal is white.
Both types are made up of large crystals which must be ground down. The silica gel that is manufactured expressly for use in preserving flowers is a sandy-type agent, almost powdery in texture. Silica gel can be bought from most hardware stores, garden centers, chemists, hobby or craft stores. They sell silica gel under various brand names and packages (Flower-Dri, Hazel Pearson etc.), and the best is to shop around to find good brand and suitable price.
To remove the moisture from silica gel and turn the crystals back to blue, put the silica gel in an old but clean and dry shallow, oven-proof dish (such as a lasagna casserole) and putting the dish in the oven at 250?F - for half an hour or until the cobalt chloride crystals return to their original bright blue color. At this point, the silica gel is ready to be used again or to be stored in airtight containers for cooling until needed. As silica gel will absorb moisture from the air as well as from flowers buried in it, it is best to keep it covered at all times.
Silica gel is not toxic, but remember never use silica gel containers or dishes for preparing food after you use them for drying flowers or for drying silica gel, because they often absorbs pesticides from plants as they dry.

Id advise going for the silica gel kitty litter. look for the ingredient panel it should only say silica gel in the side, the container will probably be clear anyways. 8 bucks CDN gets you three pounds of it, and its reusable if you dry it in the oven. same goes for silica gel packs but they will turn brown in the oven. i find they are very good for freezer storage and keeping condesation levels down. you can make your own packs with either tea bags (style) or paper towel and staples (ghetto). sidenote for freezer storage: let the bag warm to room temp before opening to avoid heavy condensation.

pc- pm me. i can get them for you, *used* though (from sealed rx stock bottles... not *as* bad as shoes)... they really aren't *used* in the sense theyve been sucking up moisture already- theyve just been keeping pills from sticking together in a non-humid enviro. i can bring them to calgary too :)
