Comparison of wet to dry weight (pic)
    #3659328 - 01/21/05 04:11 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

We are told that mushrooms are approx. 90% water, therefore always assuming that you can multiply your wet weight harvest by .10 to get your final dry weight, but it's not always the case.  Dosing on dried goods is always more accurate then fresh mushies in my opinion, because you know how much you're getting.  A flush from fresh to cracker dried, look at the huge margin in weight:

Fresh

Cracker dry

Dosing on fresh mushrooms is a gamble

It's true. A friend of mine had a PF cake that she said yielded 92 grams wet (!) and 6.6 grams dry. A fine harvest, but still very disproportionate - due no doubt to waterlogging.

Indeed.

Under normal conditions, 92% water is a good estimate...

It's not just waterlogging in the mushroom, but it's also the coir/verm/brf that is at the base of the mushroom. This stuff is usually wet and not cleaned off when people get their "wet weight". If your wet to dry ratio is a lot less than 8%, I think the junk at the base is usually the culprit.

This is for cleaned mushrooms, I don't know anyone who weighs their flush with casing material still attached to the bases.

I've seen lots of posts here where people ask how you clean the stuff of the bottom and the most common answer is "Wait until it dries and then use a toothbrush/fingernail and brush/scrape the verm/coir/etc off"
If this is the case, then any wet weight would include this stuff.

I use a soft tooth brush while still wet. A 70 gram flush dried to about 5 grams.

Hence the old saying; "Don't count your chickens 'till the mushrooms are dry."

Fingernail might be the easiest for stripping gunk off while wet.

WOW! I've never took notice of this! I've always picked, cleaned and poped into mouth :smirk:
Dried afew here and there, but usually just end up giving them away by the bag full. Guess thats why I have some many friends

arent fresh supposed to be more potent? so if the weight comes under a bit ie over 92% water, then that potentness will make up for it
