fruiting chamber help
    #3659087 - 01/21/05 03:28 PM (19 years, 30 days ago)

so I set up a chamber in a tupperware container (one of the storage ones about twice the size of a shoebox). There's a layer of perlite on the bottom to create humidity and the whole box sits on a heating pad to keep the temp up. Anyways, I've had one cake in there for almost a week, it hasnt started pinning yet, but the setup seems to be creating a lot of water which condenses on the cover and drips onto the cake. I know the cake shouldnt be soaking up this much water, so any suggestions on how to fix this before I put all my other cakes in?

get rid of the heating pad, you only need it warm to incubate, fruiting takes place at room temp

The shroomery FAQ says fruiting and pinning should take place at 74 to 78 degrees F. this is by no means room temperature in the northern hemisphere.

to prevent the lid from dripping on the cake tilt it about five or ten degrees, then the water will run down the side. how you best do this is up to you.

something else u can do is smear vaseline on the lid..
or u can do what i did and tape something like a towel to the top of the lid... that way the lid will hold heat longer and be slightly warmer then the sides and so condense wont form there...

your temp [Re: Vertigo6911]

one thing that is said about temp is that (considering that your jars were incubated at 84f) the drop to your room temp is enough to create a massive flush and usually cold shocking the cakes is not necessary.
completely off the subject too but the first time my friend ever did pf cakes he decided at the last moment to case some of the cakes but do others in poor man pods. if you're cakes could wait a few days (which they always can, don't be afraid of casings, it is as easy as putting them in bags, cutting it with a sterile spoon, and casing it in any sort of container with a non-nutritious sterile(in the microwave) layer. you increase your yields and also your surface area when you do this.
under the casing section, look for casing 101; excellent for first time. you could use a few of your cakes as an experiment and birth the others as you desire.
whatever your choice, good luck with it

You can also install a drip sheild. But this is not really going to be necesary until Pinning actually starts. The worst thing your doing right now is keeping the cakes moist which IMO is really good. I have water droplets dropping on mine all the time and they love it .... No ill affects.

Good Luck
