Green Thumb Etymology
    #3660174 - 01/21/05 06:30 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I have this theory that the term, "Green Thumb" originated from people who manually pruned plant matter using their thumb nails. The plant material then stained their thumbs green...hence Green Thumb.

Whatcha think?

It's quite possible. Many people say to pinch buds, the most recent times in which I've heard it were in relation to mums, since they're sold in earnest around late september and early november. Many people reccomend to pinch back the buds to encourage more flower bud growth. I'd imagine, though most probably don't pinch them anymore, that in past times people would pinch them with nails and fingers, thus. Which could lead me to believe that yes green thumb has the origins you suggested.

hi josh! i forgot... too bad his site is all in portuguese.
i'm gonna tell him to update it.
well, according to himself and his piles of dictionaries, green thumb is a formation of expressive origin, i mean, its in order to evoke an image. it is in order to express the degree of affinity the cultivator has with his plants.
he also says it's interesting to remind that the french has an identical expression 'puceau vert', same meaning.
and so the doctor says. =)

How does he know that the original image, as discussed above, did not lead to the term which is used to evoke the original image?

Did you describe to him what my thoughts were?

After working with plants for a while, I often find my fingers and thumb to turn green...is that just a coincidence?

Thanks for checking.

BTW...I suggest that you post an update in the News forum regarding Brasil and the legalization issue...I am interested.

Joshua

yes, i told him your guess for the origin but he told me it is, according to his websters and dictionaries, a elucidative expression.
i think the green in our nails is just a coincidence, but he might be wrong.
i hate using my thumbs, it does stain green for a while. =)

on the legalization stuff, it's not going to happen. i'm not being pessimist, i'm realistic. if we were big pimps from the tobacco industry and pressed ($$$) the senators it sure would be approved... perhaps these pimps made a research and found that the tobacco and/or alcohol (cocaine? crack?) use would decrease if Cannabis get legalized for consumption...
it sure would be an interesting topic of discussion here in the world social forum...
i am going to the opening tomorrow, i wanna see what the president has to say. he sure is warned about the needs of the masses, that they're going to demand him to do what he has promised...
i'll keep you guys posted, he's gonna be asked about it and it's gonna be a good riot if he makes the crowds unhappy...

Some gardeners are able to shape plants by gently bending their branches into more favorable positions, an operation that depends on the sensitivity of their thumbs. I have frequently heard on tv gardening shows that these folks are said to have "green thumbs". Less talented gardeners will break the branches when they try to bend them, or the branches will fail to stay in the bent position, and these folks do not have green thumbs.
"Green Thumb" wasn't in my giant Webster's Unabridged International dictionary. WordNet Dictionary says, " [n] ?a special ability to make plants grow." Spanish also uses the term, "pulgar verde", but it looks like they barrowed it from English speakers. My personal definition for green thumb is a person who is sensitive to the needs of plants.
