coarse or fine verm best for casing?
    #3659698 - 01/21/05 07:19 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I've read lots of good casing teks here regarding verm, but nobody specifies if they use coarse or fine (big chunks or small grains). Any recommendations, does one work better than the other? I plan on using the verm/coir mix.

I've had good results using both sizes for casing, there doesn't seem to be a better or worse one - just preference. I like smaller verm because it retains moisture a little better IMO.

I prefer "pea" sized or smaller for both substrate and casing mixes.
Anything smaller I usually refer to as "dust", and does not work nearly as well. A little tip - add water and microwave the verm. It will expand to full size in case it has been compressed during packaging, shipping, and storage. Compressed vermiculite will hold very little water...

geez i can only find one size of verm. Since Ive got nothing to compare it to Id say it is med-large.

But the bottom of the bag always has heaps of fine shit.

Fine is great for a contam barrier when using the PFTek,other than that it sucks IMHO, It saturates very easy, doesn't breath at all and makes for a horrible microclimate! Med/course makes for workable casing but IMHO is quite inferior to a peat or coir/verm casing mix.

fine is closer to powder, coarse is the chunks. coarse usually works best for casing. it holds water longer and give the myc room to grow.

Coarse verm is like 1/2 inch in diameter are you sure thats what you use? I mean thats not much less then the thickness of my whole casing layer. Verm like pea sized is medium grade or horticultural. Thats the grade I've found is best...like 1-3mm (instead of 8-10mm for course).

Thanks for that tip atwar! Never heard of that before but I buy 6 cu foot bags of the shit...definatly gets compressed...makes sense...things absorb water better in the heat too..

In our neck of the woods course rarely gets 1/2" in size. Usually the largest chunks are 1/4". When using verm alone then I suggest a mixture of med/course. You really don't want verm larger than 6mm (1/4"), but given a choice take course over fine everytime. GL
