well kinda In my minds eye. I see beatniks living in cities wearing flip flops and cutoff jeans, chillin in coffee shops reading poetry and working on other arts.
They like jazz and other swingin sounds.

Maybe just cuz I view my self as the above but I also view many of my points of view as hippyish I kinda feel them as a close related culture.

they are both counter cultures, and they are similiar.
the beatniks just have more style, and are classyier.

I don't view myself as either. I'm just me. I think I (we) are far too complicated to be categorized and generalized into this group or that. Just be and don't worry about the label so much.

Do you consider yourself a latter-day "beatnik"? Even young fans of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg proudly christen themselves with the tag beatnik these days, apparently unaware that word was originally coined as a term of ridicule by San Francisco columnist Herb Caen. "Beat" was indeed used by Kerouac to denote both "beaten down" and "beatitude" -- a state of revelation. He first heard the word spoken by a Times Square hustler and writer named Herbert Huncke; then another writer, John Clellon Holmes, popularized the term "Beat" in a New York Times article headlined "This is the Beat Generation." But the original Beats did not approve of the term "beatnik" -- combining "beat" with the Russian "Sputnik," as if to suggest that the Beat writers were both "out there" and vaguely Communist -- as this hilarious dialogue between a very young Ginsberg, anthropologist Margaret Mead, and an excruciatingly square talk-radio host makes plain.

The attempt to define oneself is a very healthy thing to do. Just be careful that you don't attempt to measure yourself to others. In other words, the definition of you and all that which make you who you are is unique to you alone. If you define youself with the labels that we in our society so aptly stick on people you will not be defining you, but rather a group of people similar in some aspects to yourself.

True self definition can only be found when you forget about everyone else in the world and how they view and label you. They are only seeing a portion of you. They can only see that part of you that you choose to you show them and this is sometimes not the true you. Often we tend to 'wear a mask' or 'put on a show' for people due to our ego and the desire for acceptance by others. Only you can know yourself and who you are to the very core of your being.

Hippy is an establishment label for a profound, invisible, underground, evolutionary process. For every visible hippy, barefoot, beflowered, beaded, there are a thousand invisible members of the turned-on underground. Persons whose lives are tuned in to their inner vision, who are dropping out of the TV comedy of American Life.
Timothy Leary (The Politics of Ecstasy) 1967

I agree with what you say above. Its kinda derogatory how the pappers called this generation "beat" do to there lack of motivation for material gain. I see the term beat as fallowing the beat of my feet, the beat of my heart, fallowing the beat that every one moves to in one way or an other.
