Don't forget the fact that they would have to modify a person's vehicle to attach a GPS. There is no way they could track a person long term without tapping into a vehicle's electrical system.

This case was argued strictly on an expectation of privacy basis. If you drive your vehicle in public you have no reason to expect that your movements will be private. That's it. Simple and obvious. You could, however, argue that the government agent vandalized your vehicle by emplacing said object. If you are intent on committing certain acts that you would otherwise not reveal to government scrutiny and insist on using your vehicle for that purpose, then you might want to invest in a device that would detect a GPS unit on your vehicle. And if you find one you might consider filing a vandalism complaint against whoever put it there.

As far as erosion of rights, though, you never had a right to privacy in public.

it's kind of a gray area. you are in your own private automobile, but on public roads, then again when you pull in somewhere it's usually private property. very, very gray

The location of your vehicle on a public road is not private. When you pull in somewhere you can usually be seen from a public road, again, not private. Your car can certainly be seen from the air even on an enormous estate. If however you pull inside a private building you have an expectation of privacy for whatever you do there, but still not the fact that your vehicle is there. Not gray at all. Essentially, all they have done is affirm that someone can follow you by electronic proxy.

Police shouldn't be allowed to stalk people.

If they can track your car, a private piece of property, with GPS because it's on public roads, then is it alright if they track you with a GPS whenever you are out on public property?

That's the law. Your car is not a private piece of property, it is a piece of private property. See license plate if you think your car is private.
