Problems?

I think I have problems. A rye jar looks good mostly (about 60% fluffy white) but there is one dark spot about the size of a nickle, dark brown to black. It is a couple shades darker than the rye and is surrounded almost all the way around by the mycelia. Should I toss that jar, cut that area out when I case (plan to on Saturday)or wait to see if the mycelia overcomes whatever that is? 1 rice jar is almost 100% colonized but has little brown circles appearing in a few places. Primordia or a problem? Thanks for any advice you can share. Abe

toss the contaminated jar out... the one with brown spots, are they light brown, almost a dirty yellow colour? That might just be because of moisture. Little brown circles are common when mycelium comes into contact with water... Birth that cake immediately, unless the spots are dark in colour.

They are dark brown spots . . more like tiny little circles. Within a few of them it looks like a tiny being is taking life. Does that mean anything? Thanks Abe

I don't really know, doesn't sound like water-mycelium anymore... Dark brown sounds like a contam... Are they growing bigger?

The conventional wisdom goes: when in doubt, throw it out. But you might just let your mycelium finish colonizing, then case the jar and take your chances. I think the danger from so-called contaminated mushrooms is exaggerated, but maybe I'm wrong

Could it be a clump of spores?

Aren't clumps of spores little black dots? My friend has had a few blackish dots here and there in a couple of jars, and there's no smell and it's not growing. I didn't think that bigger brown circles could be spores though... If the circles are big, then I dont think it's spores...

Yes, Shiznitz, they're black. If these spots grow larger it's a contam.

The little spots seem to be staying about the same size. Next to one, there is a small, thin, jagged brown line that looks like a root. Could it be rhizomorphic (sp?) or a prob? If I can figure out how to use the memory stick thing on my digital camcorder, I'll take a shot and post it. The nickel-size brown dot has gotten quarter size and it looks like a battle between it and the mycelium. I am rooting for the mycelium to win. If I case the little-dot jar, there is no chance of any contams making their way into other containers nearby, is there? Thanks for any input Abe
