Vermiculite Seal
    #3657850 - 01/21/05 11:27 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Which is better when making brf cakes, after i add my verm/brf/water mixture to the jar should i put a layer of tinfoil in the jar and then my dry layer of verm or should i not use tinfoil and just put a dry layer of verm directly on top of my mixture. I've noticed that when I do my jars with the tinfoil after i pressure cook my jars an area of air forms in between my mixture and the tinfoil, is this bad or good or not important? The myc seems to grow just fine in the space between mixture and tinfoil.

stick to the tek, it doesnt sound like the foil would seal too well underneath the vermiculite. how tight do you put your foil on top of the jar? sounds like the air inside the jar is just expanding when it heats, I wouldnt worry about that.

That pocket of air is fine, that's the only method of verm barrier I've ever done (fiol underneath) and it worked out great each time.

You can do the verm layer without the tinfoil i heard, was just wondering which is better, i've read one tek that says use tinfoil and another that doesn't.

no offense to anyone but not only does that sound like it is inferior to a layer of vermiculite with the foil on top the lid, but it sounds like a pain in the ass to get the foil to fit right in the jar, IMHO. BTW what made you want to do it this way instead of following the pftek or MMGG?

Inferior?  It's the same concept, and it's really very easy to make a crater of foil, fill it with verm, and screw the cap on.  Some people like the Ramsey seal better then having a dry layer of verm sitting directly on their substrate.

Try not to think about it too much, it's nothing.  :tongue2:

The old Ramsey seal is still in a lot of teks these days. I don't think that many folks use it anymore. The sterile verm layer works fine. It contains no nutrition, so contaminants landing on it can't get a start.

Try living without the foil. I'm betting that you won't go back.

Alright thanks for the info guys, thats what I was wondering is if I had to use the foil because it sucks having to put foil on top of 24 jars, lol.

Ive never heard of doing it this way

___lid_______

__Dry Verm_____

____Foil_______

____Substrate__

This is the first Ive heard. I put the Sub in the jar, cap it off with dry verm and put on lid then a bit of foil for safety. Works fine. It does seem a bit trick with the foil under the dry verm. It seems it wouldnt work as well since the verm will shape more to the sub layer than the foil would.

Am I wrong?

I searched on "ramsey seal" after I popped off about inferiority, and it seems like a debate on its effectiveness since way back. If you took the time to make a template and cut out the foil so its not real thick I can see why it may be better in some peoples mind. If you have a substrate with proper water content the dry vermiculite may leech a small quantity of water from it, the foil would combat that. I just think its an unnecessary step to waste time, but I guess if you got problems with the regular tek you should try something else, like this

just put a dry layer of verm directly on top of the substrate.

there is no need to use alum foil between the dry verm and the substrate.

good luck!~
