Freezing - Newbie Temp. Question?
    #3655724 - 01/20/05 10:29 PM (12 years, 5 days ago)

I've got my incubation setup in an attic-closet type room. One wall
faces directly to the outside with very little insulation. The temps
here have been around 12-30 degrees during the nights & days, with
wind chill. I had trouble stabilizing the temp since I work & could
not monitor the situation as I wanted. I'm using a fish tank heater
& a heating pad set on low to minimize drying out. I would check as often as I could and twice discovered the incub. chamber had climbed to 96 degrees for a couple of hours. I've researched, read, checked
forums & posts and learned about growth parameters. "Thermal death at
106 degrees!"  This was only the 2nd or 3rd day after innoc. & don't think any mycelia was producing their own heat. Will the jars be O.K.? I've final got it to stay at 80-85, do you think any damage was done? I plan on checking the jars on the 7th day for signs of mycl. growth. Hope I didn't kill em. Anyone with this experience?
Thanks in advance. All comments appreciated.
Happy Trails...to you!!! "PAZ"

Can you describe your setup a little more? How/why are you using a heating pad and aquarium heater? Aquarium heater in a TnT setup is all you need to maintain steady incubation temperature.

Hopefully your spores surived only being subjected to that temp for a few hours, but that is pretty damn hot. All you can do at this point is wait it out and see.

What temp scale are you using? You have 12-30 degree nights and 80+ degree days?
Where do you live....mars?
I suspect you are Canadian and want to speak Celcius but has switched to Farenheit half way through your post.
Anyway, if your shootin spores you'll be ok with a short spike in temp but if your doin myc on grain, you have a good chance of loosing it.
80-85 is too hot to be setting your ideal temp at anyway. 78 is good and allows your core temps to stay at ideal temps.
Get a digital temp probe and set the air temp so that it keeps your core temps in check. If your still in jars and can't use a probe put the jar to your cheek. If it feels warm, your too hot.

Yeah, what he said ^^^
As long as the heating pad wasn't laid right up against the jars, as to burn them in one spot, they'll be ok

Setup is (9) PF-BRF 1/2 pt.jars innoc'd with syringe of vitamin B+ in a single sterlite tub. Fish tank (no degree settings) heater set on high in large glass pickle jar, heating pad directly under tub, large dark thick terry cloth covering on top. Temp inside can be adjusted by how much of the tub sits on the heating pad. Also cloth covering acts as tent type structure trapping warmth around tub. RH is 83%, moisture all inside chamber. I'm using & therm. & hydrometer I got at reptile pet store, not the most accurate I guess. The attic-closet room is unheated, and can fluctuate greatly.

I'm on the east coast (mid-Atlantic state) have been having a very deep cold spell nights & days with no relief in site. Snowstorm expected this week end. Hate this F..K'n winter wonderland. I've got "the summertime blues, & there ain't no cure."

All this is purely hypothetical and does not exist in the real world. Only in the minds eye of the unintended.

Thanks All, I'm gonna back off a little on temp, they say less is more... better to be to low then to high, just very anxious!

Happy Trails... Sleep tight...

Dude, if their incubating, don't give them moisture, that's just asking for contams. I'm sure everyone will agree with me.

Ya moisture is not needed in a closed jar at all.
I would say your doing the right thing by backing off the temp.
Once you get your first flush and trip every night for a week you can take a break and buy a heater that is adjustable and a digital temp/humidity guage. You might have everything nailed as far as params go already but it never hurts to know.
Hope your having some fun in a couple weeks.
