First Casing **HARVEST PICS** Wheres the fatties??
    #3655270 - 01/20/05 09:01 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Well here's pics of my first casing! It's 5 1/2ping PFTek GT Strain jars, cased with 50/50 potting soil/verm... Wondering why theres no FAT shrooms and there all soo skinny? any opinions? I have a bubbler running 24/7 and fan 3 times a day, light 9hrs a day... the humidity is maxed out I believe since its a PMP... could humidity have anythign to do with it?

And here's my little EQ casing pinning

I also have 7 1 pint WBS jars ready to go! but no idea what to do with em in a hurry?? thinking I might just case em same as the rest... 50/50 Verm/Potting Soil....

That's been my experience with GT recently too, and it got me to wondering about isolates, and what is actually floating around nowadays. Years ago it seems GT produced consistently thick stemmed, beautiful golden cap mushrooms-on various substrates/setups. A classic picture of this can be seen on Sporeworks image gallery...you'll know the pic when you see it. I swear that either 1) the genetics have gone downhill or 2) there just isn't a healthy isolate in circulation. But this doesn't really add up.

Look at your average GT bulk grow today. Compost/Poo/Straw isn't producing the thick stemmed monsters typical of "old" GT that I remember-it's just throwing out ALOT more of them per flush. Copious quantities of skinny little runts, instead of less, thicker fruits per flush. This is also considering substrate/spawn/bulk and substrate depth.

I remember GT being a badass, thick stemmed fruit 5 or so years ago, and I'm not seeing alot (if any) of those results anymore. Maybe I'm seeing the past through rose colored glasses, but I swear the GT of yesterday is no longer.

Nice grow anyhow, enjoy.

Probably something to do with assimilation and adaptation

LOl I agree with HolyDiver. And I have been posting this before.

GT is not GT anymore. There are so many "sub-GT's " a huge variation thanks to our human interference and cloning etc. It may have its upsides, but also its downsides. GT can be replaced with many other strains.
So its hard to compair a strain these days, if you grew GT on a PF cake with same ratio, same water same brand of BRF, same verm. Same incubator same terrarium same temps etc etc. Still thereis a difference cause GT isnt GT anymore.......

And why do we clone and isolate etc?
Cause nature cant satisfy us, we want more we are GREEDY. So we manipulate.

Oneof the reasons I am against manipulation of DNA in humans, other animals and plants. A whole other story.

I have my first grow under way right now with a GT strain I ordered from sporeworks.com It is very slow to colonize, I have a tub in tub with a heater at 82 degrees and it has taken 8 weeks for 3 cakes to fully colonize. Got those 3 in a fruiting chamber right now with 12/12 light, ultrsonic humidifier and perlite base. They have been in there 4 days now and are showing some primordial knots, but nothing else. I'll post some pics when they get a little bigger.

Its probably genetics from the spores.

Ah cakes, if not enough gas exchange and/or too packed substrate, not evenly distibuted spores (shake syringe) it indeed can take MONTHS to colonize fully. So dont blame it on the vendor to easy!

Also 82F is not optimum but within 3 to 4 weeks a cake must be able to colonize in there.

My first cakes took 8 weeks as well. Hence I used wrong verm/water/brf ratio, substrate was slightly packed. I added sterile water later. I had the holes blocked with tinfoil, I did not shake syringe before inoc. The jars with growth grew only from 1 or 2 places. Making it also longer to fully colonize.

2 got contammed, I birthed 2, 2 others did not ever finish, and 4 no growth at all.
Only one fruited, and it is now going into 5th flush, it got its first pins after 3 days. So eager it was.. :P

Yeah potting soil works fine, when sterilized. I use potting peat though...

You may be on thr right track there. I didn't pack my subtrate at all, it is very loose in the jars. I don't think I shook the syringe though, I didn't read that part of the Tek until after I had already inoculated. You say 82 is not the ideal temp? I thought that was just about right, what would you suggest? I am going to try again after this grow with some fresh spores and see if I get better results.

82F is fine though, but 84-86F is the bomb.

Yeah if syringe not purple you better shake the hek out of it! :P Also the type of verm plays a role IMHO. Too fine is no good.

Good luck man!

Thanks! I'll post a grow log on the next batch. I was just reviewing some inoculation and casing teks, think I will utilize my fresh grown shrooms to start the next batch along with some petri dishes filled with agar as a control. Thanks for the tips, I'll crank up the heat on my tubs and see if that helps.

Pf tek for simple minds was good for me....

WBS I use a combo between 6Tango and Doc34 teks. I keep the sunflower seeds in, I simmer, but not that long, only a 10-15 minutes high simmer.

Agar I use BRF instead, Doc34's alt.agar tek. Adding light malt extract also works.

Liquid medium I use Agars(the user) advice, I use a 1-4% solution of LME&DEXTROSE.

Inoculating grain jars, also agars advice, one hole squirt in 5 directions, one in the middle.

Cakes dunk (8-16 hours depends on how I feel  )  and roll.  They colonize in 2 weeks now if I have a fresh viable syringe.

Incubate in TIT. 84-88F.

Good luck!

MF
