What is the name of the Strain..?
    #3654343 - 01/20/05 06:00 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I've heard of an edible mushroom strain that tastes similar to Lobster, is this a myth or does anyone know what its called? Any addition information about it would be much appreciated, thanks.

It's called Lion's Mane. Hrm...how do you remove it from the spawn once it has grown? How do you know when it's ready? Where does it sporulate from? Does it have multiple flushes?

I've found that the taste of Lion's mane can vary quite a bit from strain to strain, and is also open to quite a bit of taste bud "interpretation."  Most strains I have experienced have a cooked texture similar to lobster, but when it comes to taste they've reminded me of everything from eggplant to moldy wood.  My buddy, on the other hand, insists that he can taste the lobster overtones.  SO who knows.  I guess the flavor is in the taste buds of the beholder...

They are my favorite, picked from the wild they taste just like some of the best seafood I've ever had.

Its all just my opinion. Never had a wild one I bet that would taste good though. Maybe it was the substrate they grew on that made them taste bitter maybe it was the strain. All I know is it had a medicinal taste.

Hericium, aka Pom Pom, Lion's Mane and Monkey Head, is an excellent edible in my opinion.

I don't know about tasting like lobster or crab, its rather subtle, so maybe. But as a meaty, delicately textured mushroom, it is one of my favorites. Makes great "veal" parmesan, but better than veal.

Its often available at my grocery store, and I've never had one that tasted bitter.

And I'd like to add that it has pleasant mushroomy smell...
