Tsunami-hit Thais told: Buy six planes or face EU tariffs

FRASER NELSON
POLITICAL EDITOR

TSUNAMI-struck Thailand has been told by the European Commission that it must buy six A380 Airbus aircraft if it wants to escape the tariffs against its fishing industry.

While millions of Europeans are sending aid to Thailand to help its recovery, trade authorities in Brussels are demanding that Thai Airlines, its national carrier, pays ?1.3 billion to buy its double-decker aircraft.

The demand will come as a deep embarrassment to Peter Mandelson, the trade commissioner, whose officials started the negotiation before the disaster struck Thailand - killing tens of thousands of people and damaging its economy.

While aid workers from across Europe are helping to rebuild Thai livelihoods, trade officials in Brussels are concluding a jets-for-prawns deal, which they had hoped to announce next month.

As the world?s largest producer of prawns, Thailand has become so efficient that its wares are half the price of those caught by Norway, the main producer of prawns for the EU.

To ensure the Thais cannot compete, EU officials five years ago removed its shrimp industry from the EU?s generalised system of preferential tariffs - designed to share Western wealth with developing countries by trade.

I wish you'd spend more time bashing the Evil US rather than the USER (Union of Socialist European Republics).

Would you still have posted this if there had been no tsunami? Was it a bad deal before, or only now, after the disaster? Does it take anything away from the billions of dollars in relief aid that have been donated?

It's a bad deal regardless of the Tsunami. Anything that hampers the free exchange of goods is a bad deal -- despite GazzBut's protestations to the contrary. There's not a lot of things third world countries are good at, but Thailand's aquaculture is one of them. Their shrimp farming sets the bar in the aquaculture world. They're damn good in the tropical fish market as well. As a former Discus breeder I am well aware of the quality of fish the Thai breeders produce. They lead the world at it.

So the EU slaps tariffs on their shrimp to protect -- of all things -- shrimp from freakin' Norway? Just what percentage of Norway's economy has to do with catching shrimp, fa cryin' out loud! The country is swimming in oil money.

I should note the US is little better at this -- they have a tariff on imported shrimp to protect US shrimp fishermen. The only thing that makes the US marginally better in this case is that they don't tie their tariff to any airplane deal. They tax imported shrimp no matter what other side deals are going on.

If the vaunted new Airbus is as good as the EU consortium who built it claims it is, there'll be no shortage of customers for it. No need to bully other countries into buying it. I've heard they already have 150 confirmed sales.
