coarse verm
    #3653235 - 01/20/05 11:20 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I was just wondering if there's any major draw back to using coarse verm. I know fine is preferred, but is there any real significant difference. If there is, could you grind the coarse verm. down to fine. The reason I'm asking is because I just bought a big-ass bag of coarse (only kind they had) verm, and I'm having a hell of a time finding any at all being that it out of season.

i thought coarse is what u want... fine grade will (if casing) seal in the myc., and i think it also holds in more water as well, but i'm sure someone else will chime in for ya

I like to use a medium to course grade (not fine) for my jars because it creates a more airy substrate that colonizes faster.

jimber, right on.

i have a huge bag of coarse myself, and just pulse it in the coffee grinder if i need some "fine" verm. fine holds more water supposedly...

i use what i guess is medium grade for casings. just one or two pulses in the coffee grinder... but coarse goes into the jars. more airy, fluffy... not packed down. fine verm in casings sucks because it just mats down and the myc has a hard time colonizing through that. medium/coarse is great for your preferred casing mix (i like coco coir/verm).

and a little advice when you move on to casings... straight verm casing layers suck. period.

I have used both and IMO the coarse works much better.

I use horticultrural grade which I think is medium...Course verm is like 8-10mm or so....fine verm is like powder...the powdery stuff is good but so are the 2-5mm peices..you get a nice mix in a huge bag of horticultural grade....

You can chop it up if you think its too course too..but not much..just a few pluses in the grinder.
