Zimbabwe did the same thing a few years back. They ended up having massive famine problems.

I think they should look to Zimbabwe for a case study in 'land reform'.
It has resulted in Zimbabwe turning from a powerful agricultural exporter to a country racked by famine.

Yeah, it's the only country that I know of that switches to open source software for most of its administration, saving millions fur luxury goods like education, for instance. Fuckin' commies...

Probably not, but why would democracy not do the job? Chavez has been elected and then confirmed in power several times. The "democratic" opposition (which staged a "democratic" coup that failed, with support of the US and Spain) had been mobilizing like crazy for months before the latest referendum in August, which was again easily won by Chavez (but the poll must have been rigged, right, like every time the result isn't convenient?). It's about time the government can go to work with full capacity instead of having to invest energy in an electoral test it has steadily survived.
The comparison with Zimbabwe is poor. Zimbabwe is a poor country with a rich minority, while Venezuela is a rich country (4th oil exporter in the world) with a poor majority. No wonder Chavez wins every election. In such a situation, where the income from the national oil reserves has been confiscated by a minority for decades, private property is bound to get slightly qualified. That's what happens when the power elite gets too small and too obviously greedy. Read "The culture of contentment", by J.K. Galbraith. If you want to achieve stability, you can only afford an important minority of poors, maybe a very small majority. But when about 80% of the people (about 70% these days, progress is on) have low incomes in an inherently rich country like Venezuela, that is just begging for restlessness.

The way you use the word "communist" makes me think of the way other people use the word "drugs", as a scarecrow kinda...

BTW, if the people of the United States were so stupid as to elect Bush to lead the US, Iraq, Afghanistan, Colombia and most of the world, why wouldn't the people of Venezuela be allowed to elect Chavez to lead Venezuela? A less harmful person in a less important position...

governments do scare me, especially communists, socialist, liberals, the left, democrats or whatever they are calling themselves today.
i believe in INCENTIVES. if hard work is not rewarded, and laziness is rewarded then we are all fucked.
i enjoy working hard and being rewarded at the end of the day with a cold beer and a big fat J.

Why work hard if you can get what you need/want without work?

You're absolutely right, and that's what the people of Venezuela stand for too. After decades of being denied their incentives and working hard for free, dominated by a lazy and greedy power elite, they finally took their fate in their own hands. They're still working hard, but they're starting to redirect the proceeds of that hard work into their own hands.
Nobody could be against that, could you?

i feel bad for the country. it has resources and should be doing better. i remember living in a 3rd world country and then visiting a 4Th world country. i could not believe the difference between 3rd and 4Th. it could get worse in Venezuela. (hope not)
