rotten or not? need help immediately
    #3647732 - 01/19/05 10:14 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

hi ppl!

i'm new to this board, so i'm not exactly sure if this is the right place to post.

i've got some fresh shrooms and i decided to dry them.
everything looked fine for 2 days (i've put them on to a newspaper under my radiator, still the temperature was definiteley under 25? celsius). but today (actually starting yesterday) some of them have turned a bit black.

now i moved them in to a air proof box with salt and they're on a piece of paper. i want to prevent the decaying process, what can i do?
i really don't wanna toss them!  :frown:

Are they still wet ?
Well it's difficult to say judging by the pic, can't you take a close up on some mushrooms ?
Many times while drying, heavily bruised mushrooms tend to become black on those bruised spots.
Try using a fan and some dissecant. Don't enclose the mushrooms inside air tight compartments, they need to expel all humidity.

OK, well, I'm not sure what I've done wrong. But some seem to be "healthy" (no bruises at all), while others are already completely darker. now i just left the box open and kept the salt as a desiccant at the bottom. Hope they won't turn darker :frown:

I've got the idea with the air tight box from this page:

I have ran into problems just using desicant. Fan dry them first and then use desicant to get the remaining water out. Or you can just fan dry them for 48-72hrs and they should be completely dry.

I would get a food dehydrator, no potency loss if dried at lowest setting of 95 degrees, no higher though. Some may not agree, but just try it and decide for yourself.
