Some what dry, although straight dung work well, it works better if it has some thing to help airate it. Because it compacts as it asorbs moisture. Straw works the best, but one could use any thing as in vermiculite ,coco fiber ect.

humplok.. FOAF has had luck w/ store bought stuff. Just make sure you buy organic or it will most likely have been paseurized in or treated with fungicides.

You don't want the stuff too moist. If you let it drip dry overnight in a pillow sac, the moisture should be about right. You're trying to get about the same relative moisture content as you would have in a brf cake or grain jar.

The day I tried to live; I stole a thousand beggar's change and gave it to the rich.

Egghead is right about the moisture content. Use the standard squeeze test to determine moisture. Your dung will be fine if you get it a little too moist.
I have never found the need to add Verm or anything else to my dung---just use straight dung.

The moisture content of ALL casings and/or spawned substrates (what ever they might be) should have the same water consistency as a "proper" PF cake.

Is there a tek for spawning dung? (turd tek? heh heh).
Does one pasteurize dung, or just go with it right out of the bag?

hello all.. a couple of questions on this topic.

I've read that unless you compost the dung you will have some troubles...but from what i'm reading here..it's not necessary to do this..??

and...ditto on the pasteurization question... thanks

To answer these questions.........
No, dung does NOT have to be composted. I have, and do, use it when it is still pretty fresh.
No it doesn't have to be paseurized befor use. Although, it may be wise. It will help get rid of bugs and unwanted mycelium that may already in habit the manure.
Bonus answer......
One does not have to sterilize dung. Infact, it can cause more harm than good.

That's a good point. Sterilizing manure/dung does more harm than good. There are micro-organisms that you want to stay alive in your dung. Sterilizing dung makes a nutritious substrate (which is very prone to contams when sterilized) out in the open. You can call it a "Sizzler for Contaminants".

BUT- you can pressure cook dung when using it for spawn. This is good for any and all of your "friends" but especialy good for the pan trops and pan cyans.

peace
