5wk old cakes-tan color
    #365208 - 08/02/01 12:26 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

My cakes which are about 5 weeks old have developed a tan color on the bottom. It's not fuzzy at all and looks to me like it may be dead mycelium. It's not just in spots either but rather thin and spread out. They also smell fine with no distinct oders except a mushy oder.
My cakes have also been blueish for weeks now. I have been assuming it's from bruising and water depletion.
They are still giving off small amounts of shrooms so I dont really want to chunk them. The shrooms growing look fine, with the exeption of two that I had left over a week while on vacation and the caps were all rotted bluish/green.
All the pictures of cakes I see all are totally white with no coloration.
Is this coloration normal for older cakes or am I just making excuses to keep the cakes?

Please respond.
Thanks.

The cakes aren't contaminated but its probably time that they go. They are on their last leg. They mycelium isn't as strong as in the beginning so its more likely to get contamination now. I say, chuck 'em before they get all green on you.

Can you make a guess at what the tan color is? Is this dead mycelium or mold? I have a good handfull of fruit that have been picked since this showed up and I am deciding if I should consume them.

I assume (Since I can't tell for sure without seeing the cake) that it is a mixture of dead mycelium and metabolic waste. New mushrooms will probably not grow on this yellowed area. You can still eat shrooms from the rest of the cake though, there is no physical harm caused by it.
